while we are on this, what are the different types of pump configurations on the E21? i have seen so many. the 320/6 carb has the mechanical one on the clock, the 320i has an electric pump, but conflicting if its an in tank pump or not/ or both. then we have the 323i which one stock car i saw had an in tank pump only then another stock one had both an in tank and an outer one under neath the car. such confusion me thinks. anything online that has a definite answer? realoem doesnt show all configurations.. unless these cars have had some dealer adjustments here and there depending on where it is sold. any thoughts?

The main rule is that the carb models have one mechanical pump that's fitted to the engine block, the fuel injected models have en electrical one under the car. The exception are the AUS spec cars where the fuel injected models also have an electrical unit inside the rhs fuel tank just like the E30 has. May have something to do with safety requirements perhaps. I wouldn't be surprised if a few, but no more than a few, AUS spec setups ended up in cars sold elsewhere but those would be the real exceptions.
