New shocks required

Post by AndyBaur »

The mystery of the Baur’s excessive nose-down stance has been explained by the discovery the front shocks are totally knackered. I thought the front was a little bouncy!

I’ve been looking at a new set of shocks & found there isn’t a lot of choice. There’s Spax of course (best price £428) although I don’t need springs, Bilstein B4 at £280 (B6 are well over £400 just for the shocks) & Monroe which are a bit cheaper than the Billies but out of stock.

I’m not looking for a road racer so I think the B4’s would do with all the rubber bushings changed for Superflex to tighten things up. The rear axle beam bushed are shot too although I was just going to get the standard BMW hard versions.

Any other suggestions for shocks?

Is there any real world benefit from changing the front struts to the larger 323’s 51mm units?

On a similar note, what sort of price do 323 trailing arms & rear disc set up go for?

As for the shocks, I'd go for a normal quality setup that you can expect from B4's, or go better using B6's if you have a sporty driving style. Monroe and Boge are cheaper but also they don't last as long as Billies. Sachs do a good job under a bone stock car but I'm not sure how good they cope with your current lowering springs.
