anyone got any idea what these numbers on the top of my m10 engine block could be about as i have never seen any numbers stamped here (inline with the gearbox number)on any other m10 block ...The only part of the numbers i can clearly make out is 320 to the left but the block has 320i/alpina higher compression pistons which are correct for my 320i engine not a 320 engine....any ideas !!!

Remanufactured (by Bmw) 320i motor.
320 EK A (EK = Einspritzer K-jetronic, A = austausch)
or 320 EK/2 (same, but from 8/78 up. Some minor differences and used in e12 520i).
On right side "production" date.
Gearbox Getrag 245 overdrive.

Excellent answer ! Could it being a remanufactured engine explain why their is no engine number on the block ?
