fuel pump issue

Hi could anybody help me on a fuel pump issue. I think mine is on the way out as if I dont start the car for a while it wont pump the petrol through and not start, I have to tip a bit of petrol down the carb then it works fine.It happened with the old pierburg and now with the new weber 32/36. Could you tell me if either of these pumps would be suitable for my 316 being an '83

I have been to BMW they could get me one in 2 weeks but it would be over £100 and these webers are a bit cheaper.

M10 engine right? Doesn't matter what carb you use, the fuel pump is unrelated (mechanically driven by a rod that comes out of the side of the head).

All the carb'd M10's I've had had the same pump, regardless of year. Someone may correct me though. I think this will fit;

When removing the old pump there are a couple of little white plastic plugs that go in the fuel pump mounting holes. Keep hold of them, as the new pump may not have them. You might want to try changing the inline fuel filter too - could be clogged? Only cost £2 from any motor factors..

cheers for that Reck. It is the M10 engine. I did think that the carb and fuel pump were unrelated thats why I was presuming that the pump was on the way out, also said by the mechanic that changed the carbs over and had trouble starting the car through lack of juice going to the weber. one of the links that i (posted wrongly) in the original thread is the same as your link which states, up to 1980 the other says up to '79 which is a little confusing. they didnt have a different length push rods with different years like on the vw flat four fuel pumps???? Cheers for any more thoughts

to through a spanner in all of this there is another pump which is pierburg, a little more expensive but still not as much as BMW quote.

Dunno about the pushrod length. The pushrod just slides out, so I guess you could shorten it easily if necessary. I don't think they were different but it is disconcerting how they specify different years.

I used the ebay pump I posted on an 81 M10 with a Weber 32/24. IIRC it fitted the 83 M10 in my current car but couldn't use it as I destroyed those white plastic plugs I mentioned.

The pierburg one looks about the same to me. Probably more expensive because it's branded?

What I see on bmwfans.info is that pushrods and rings are all the same for M10 engines. The only thing that has changed is the fuel pump itself, changed as per production Sept 1980. But if the rest is the same, including the bottom gasket, how much different can the pump be.
