K-jetronic alternatives?

I've been reading up as much info as I can lately on my car, and from what I've read, the jetronic system I have currently is most likely the source of my terrible mileage (I'm in the low 20's when I'm driving conservatively, as low as 16mpg when I'm out having fun), and is all-around terrible for a casual user. Everything in the system is extremely sensitive and expensive, and I'd rather not deal with it all-together. What could I do differently to get rid of the stock injection? Would it be a really simple switch to go to L-jetronic or something? Or would I have to hunt for an entire new engine?
