So finally in mid of 2013 my car was ready to go to track and have some fun! Of course some issues were still present but they didn’t keep me from running this green sharky.
So first baptism of fire was on 18th July. It was damn rainy evening. But that couldn’t keep me from going to track! Too much waiting! :) Remember I was talking about sex with this car. So I very hoped that this sex will finally give me some pleasure. :D

Let it rain!
Image

In the same day car got tuned with a help of specialist on the phone. It gave some results. Car got little bit more power. But still there were some strange issues. Time after time it felt that one of cylinders is not working. Later problem was found. Bad coil. So they all were changed to brand new.
On first training session everything was fine till I started to feel some misbehavior on corners. Stopped for a look and found that rear wheel was flat.. thanks to stiff suspension I didn’t damaged tyre.
And I had another problem. I even didn’t had a tire wrench. :) Lucky somebody had it in pitstop. 
Image

Now with proper sport seat, harness and suede wheel I could drive car like it should be driven – without holding on to steering wheel or shifter. :D
One thing that I was pleased of was dogleg box. Quite short gears. That what’s for race driving is necessary. Although with 3.91 diff this this gearbox was too short. Later I switched to 3.46 diff.
Image

Some small photo session before something will be damaged. :D

Next training was not so successful. :) On some lap trying another way how to pass a corner car got little bit out of track and uncontrolled sliding accured. Thanks that it was only a wire fence not concrete blocks.
After some minutes of fresh air and I was back on the track. No regrets. This car was built for going on track on to the exhibition hall.
Later just rear light was changed and nothing else.
Image

The rest will be repaired some time later.
Image

Art I would say in HotRod style!

Several trainings were over and I understood that I didn’t receive fun anymore. I need a teacher who could teach me how to drive. And I was lucky to get this year Latvian circuit racing champion Lauris Vigants. And you know it is a very huge difference when you drive a car through the corners like it should be. My lap times improved a lot! But there still was lot of things to improve. I need to lose some fear + also get some workout as driving takes a lot of physical power. Especially concentration on what are you doing. You lose it for a while in the middle of corner and you are gone. :)

Some video from training. Filmed with GoPro. But edited with some program which messed up quality…

Some new video this time filmed with Replay XD. GoPro rules! :D

After some training I felt that car is running nice only on full throttle. Later we figured out that TPS is gone. Changed it and everything was fine again. While changing it I noticed that left side engine mount has broken. Alloy couldn’t hold that sport stress. :) Luckily I had one spare steel one in garage.
Image

My next upgrade was putting a coat to thermostat. Driving in race regime I noticed that temperature was a bit too high although I had big radiator and powerful fan. Somehow I figured out that perhaps air that was getting on to thermostat body cooled it and didn’t let it open wide. I don’t know if it was true but it helped me.
Image

Also I found some faulty thermos switch for radiator fan. It was switching on too early. It was changed to new.
Image

On next training with my teacher happened another issue. :) After some warmup laps teacher said: Push it harder! Push it harder! So I did! :) And suddenly I lost connection between throttle pedal and throttle it selt. :D Yes I broke the cable…. :D It was my fault as cable setup was faulty.. Original throttle pedal was incomplete and I could push pedal deeper than it should go…

This is how it looked like. I think you have noticed what’s have been missing…
Image

And once again I was on track naked as church rat. No tools at all. Just Cola and Snicker. :D Lucky my teacher had something and with improvising he managed somehow to renew throttle connection so I could get back to my garage. :)
Image

Bunch of cable straps and here we go!

Just some picture of engine bay

Well well that's a proper update and lovely videos. However... no helmet? That is not smart, and that's putting it mildly...

Looking forward to reading new stories!

After this down/up hill race we talked about helmets and we agreed that it was not smart. So last year helmet was mandatory. Gladly nobody got hurt before we realized that it was too late. ;)

So what happened next? Actually nothing changed . That sex in what I was involved all the time continued.

So let’s talk about it.

After season 2013 I decided that I need more power. So I took out my m10b20, gave it to one guy who knows something about building performance engines. He had a look at it, we made a list of what we could do and almost started to work on it. But then somehow remembered that couple years ago we tried to get s14 engine from some guy who kept it in basement for several years and didn’t want to sell. We did another try and we were lucky to get for my car s14 engine! Much money but we got it including original gearbox.

This engine use to be in one very well know M3. It use to belong to owner of Latvia’s biggest BMW forum owner. So everybody new it. This car even use to do some small competitions.

This is how it looked when it was in one piece. For some reason engine and gearbox got to one guy and the rest to another who installed some bigger M engine in it.
Image

This is how car looked and the end of season waiting for new heart
Image

This is how new engine looked like when it was bought
Image

As you see it is fully equipped including starter, alternator, all the wiring, ECU and gearbox. Car originaly came from Switzerland so it had 194Hp.
Image

Original intake manifold will be changed to some sporty carbonfiber one
Image

Dogleg. Now I have three of these boxes. Each from different car.
Image

Always such engines have to be stripped out to have a look if something have to be changed. Otherwise very expensive damage could accrue.
Image

But everything was looking very neat!
Image

Some measurements were made and everything was fine
Image

Anywas some special parts were ordered
Image

ARP studs
Image

A very expensive watterpump…
Image

Some NASA out of space bearings. :)
Image

Black hole edition
Image

As original s14 oil sump didn’t fit in to e21 we decided to go hardest way. Put engine back as much as possible and make a new sump. Of course new engine mounts were made as well
Image

Custom engine mounts
Image

Image

New brackets for gearbox as well
Image

Propeller shaft had to be shortened to fit new setup
Image

New oil sump getting done
Image

Oil gates installed
Image

Some cubic piece of art
Image

Before renewing engine it was used as dummy
Image

Some 5cm of space were eaten. Looks fantastic, but it has one drawback. Now it is very hard to take off gearbox as you almost can’t tilt the engine back. :)
Image

That’s how intake trumpets look inside manifold
Image

Few cm clearance between trumpet and brake booster. After some time brake booster will be deleted
Image

When engine fitment was done engine guy started work on engine.
Everything was cleaned and measured. If needed painted.
Image

As engine stood for a long time it had as we say big cultural layer on it. :D
Image

Everything numbered
Image

Everything was cleared with ultrasound and later with glasblaster
Image

Image

Some cosmetic work on engine block as well
Image

Old bearings
Image

New bearings
Image

Slowly but surely moving to finish
Image

Image

As new!
Image

From both sides
Image

Everything numbered and measured to get best results
Image

Isn’t it pretty now?
Image

None of parts were changed!
Image

Everything assembled with RedLine Assembly Lube
Image

Just need to feed gas and crank it! :D
Image

Image

...
Image

Awaiting for new studs for exhaust manifold
Image

Injectors were checked and were in good shape!
Image

...
Image

Waiting for some new original parts to finish
Image

30.05.2014

That day had come! Engine done!

Car freak test.

What did you noticed first in this picture? :D
Image

All beautiful from both sides!
Image

Custom coils for this engine. I searched very long and finally found ones that could be fitted to this engine!
Image

Alternator was rebuild
Image

The same with starter
Image

New TPS came from some Opel but latter was changed to BMW. It was smaller.
Image

Original spark distributor was change to back plate and camshaft sensor installed for fine engine tuning
Image

Camshaft cover came in in wrong color. Perhaps it will be changed some time later
Image

Engine mounts numbered
Image

The Karterz (oil sump)

Image

Intake temperature sender. This is from BMW but will be changed to VW which will work faster.
Image

For ECU there will be VEMS.

At the moment engine is in car and some other work is done slowly. Unfortunately season 2014 was skipped due to lack of time…

P.S. If someone is interested in some s14 parts that I don't need anymore please let me know.
Parts are:
* Oil sump
* ECU with wiring
* Intake manifold cover
* MAF with rubber boot.
* perhaps something else..

NOW you got my attention hahaha! The best possible setup in my opinion, which will work great and also deliver the best possible balance. However I'm amazed the original oil pan didn't fit, yeah I know it's deeper but still. Anyway, thorough job, great to see and makes it my favorite setup for a modded E21! Looking forward to further progress mate!

So guys. Almost three years are over since last post. Nothing have changed if we speak about current state of car. It rolls but doesn't drive. But we will get to that. :driving

I will do my report in several stages so please enjoy chapter one. :cheers

So were we left?

Well finally found some guy who agreed to make completely new wiring for whole car. Not just throw out all unneeded wires but put them where they supposed to be now.
Don't know if you guys have any electrician who you can trust in your country for such job but we don't. It turned out again. Guy who agreed to work promised me 3 weeks. I laughed a bit as I had already experience with electricians and kindly allowed him to have 4 weeks. And of course nothing was done after that period of time. At the end it took almost 4 months... So 2015. season was ruined. Well. What else to do...

Car finally arrive back to home.
Image

Almost everything in its place and wired.
Image

Nice and almost neat. I would have done some things different way but visual quality is good.
Image

Underdash. VEMS + relay box. All new relays from Bosch.
Image

All wires marked so I know what is what.
Image

Althoug everything was put together some things I decided to organize different way. Plus I needed to install custom cabin heater to keep windows defoged if rain comes in or If there is some competition in autumn or winter.
Image

Had to rebuild radiator as previous one had incorrect water tanks.
Image

This is my baby. Gauge cluster did completely myself. Really like how it turned out. Classic!
Image

After some time we came to state that we could try to start car. It wasn't easy as few time engine wiring had to be redone. Some wires were incorrectly installed. But we made it!
Image

Sometimes it took so much time that booster and two additional batteries were required. :D
