Hello everybody, sorry that my first post is a question but i have just bought a 320 baur and i cant start it. the car has been sat unused for a couple of years, i have drained the old petrol out and put some fresh super unleaded in, changed the plugs, coil dizzy and rotor arm so have a good spark.
i will compression test it tomorrow to check the engine is sound so am thinking its probably the carb. Does anyone here have any suggestions where to start with the carb, is there any known problems i should start with or is it just a case of rebuilding it.
cheers
gary.
ps ill get some pics up soon

Was hoping for some replies from the carb specialists but personally I'd remove the output hose from the fuel pump that's fitted to the cylinder head (preferably fit another hose and run it into a can) and see if it's giving any fuel

Offcourse that is step one. If you have fuel then you can start looking after the carb.
* Chokevalves closed?
* Throtlevalves are free to move?
* Big airvalve on top is closed?
Otherwise start to put some petrol ino the carb from top and look if there is some live in the engine?

thanks for the replies, i have drained all the old fuel out and put fresh in with a new inline filter, fuel is getting into the carb and there is a good spark.
I towed it today and managed to get it to start and it runs quite well but still wont restart on the key.
I presume that i will need to give the card a clean so will attempt a rebuild although i cant seem to find a rebuild kit, does anyone know where i can get one.
Cheers
Gary

You have towed the car and then the engine runs good. Does she idle OK?
You can check if all the electical stuff at the carb gets power.

yes the engine runs well with a good idle when running but failed to restart when i turned it off, i will check all the cold start bits and order a carb rebuild kit and see if i can sort it.
thanks

all these experts will advise you to ditch the std carb and go for a weber carb- the experts will respond I am sure
the std carb is really tricky to set up right

That may be but this is not neccesary a carb problem. Why would it run perfectly when the car is towed and not responding to the normal starter?

Almost makes you think it is a battery problem. The starter motor draining all the current not leaving enough for the ignition for example

I was thinking about that also. I would check the grounding first and then the release relay. You can check how much power you have left from the battery when you turn the key to start your engine

i had it conected up to my van when trying to start it on the key so she had plenty of power and was turning over fast enough so i dont think its a battery problem, gonna go over her latter today just make sure all fuses are good and electrical connections on the carb are working ok. if all looks good ill tow start her again and whack some carb cleaner through her and let her warm right up then see if she will restart on the key. cant be anything too bad or it wouldnt tow start.

She starts on her own now, must of been a build up of crap from sitting around unused for a couple of years. She sounds a little bit tapperty but am i right in thinking you can adjust the valve clearances on these engine?
