E30 pics thread
With many of us owning E30's as well, we should have a little discussion forum. What do we have, what are we doing, any plans or issues?
Already some nice threads going on like these:
The Belgian R-Box team is building a M3 rally car, aiming to be in action in 2014. See M3 rally car.
I'm still very happy with My 320iS. Did quite a bit of work last year, reinforced subframe, replaced conrod bearings, fitted Eibach Anti Roll Kit sway bar set, etc. After that took the car to the Alps!
Most of the time though, I work on other peoples' M3's. I have all the tools do do the specific S14 maintenance like valve adjustment and mechanical and vacuum TB sync. I have quite a bunch of M3's I service, both road and track cars and even for dealerships.
Had a little E30 M3 meet back in April (see report)
Oh and Ite has his 320iS for sale in this topic
My plans for 2014? The 320iS doesn't require any work atm but I hope to take her out several times again, and I have a lot of 3rd party maintenance jobs planned already. Will try to use this topic to keep you updated.

Re: E30's
Ahhh E30s. E21s got me started into BMWs but E30s are the ones for me, but they have to be prefacelifts with chrome bumpers in my opinion. They have retro charm similar to E21s but (again in my opinion/circumstances) far superior mechanicals. I had a beaten up old 318is and this still is the best car I've ever had. I stupidly sold it and it got smashed up drifting, I bought it back for spares as the engine is going into my black E21 316.
Now looks like....
I then M30'd a 320i touring, awesome car, but then sold it soon after
My latest project is my prefacelift 320i 4 door in a very rare green colour. Originally an auto, I bought it manualled still with the 2L engine. It was already built to drift and thats my intention for it too. I took it to many drift days in 2013 but I soon reached the limit of the 2L engine. This has now made way for an E28 M535i M30B34 with a complete E34 Motronic 1.3 conversion. I'm 90% finished but I'm dealing with some niggly things and teething issues with the M1.3 conversion... I regret not using a drag and drop E34 535i engine! I've used an M10 gearbox, S14 M3 flywheel and M20 solid paddle clutch. I stripped down an E36 rack and converted it fully to manual which is totally awesome, I also have Gaz GHA to fit all around. I just cancelled its first outing with the M30 at Snetterton on the 15th of Feb as I doubt the car will be done.
With the 2L...

Re: E30's
I've also got an E30, 1987 325iA Cabrio. Malachit grün with a PerlBeige (0206) interior. Automatic gearbox. I'm the thirth owner, since 2011. Put quite some effort in it to get it up to date. New brakelines, fuellines, new brakesystem all around, massive work on the enigine and refurbished the interior.

Re: E30's
As the local e30 interloper (who has owned 2 e21s previously ), most will have seen my car in my thread on it, but just thought I'd share a pic of the newly fixed front end. Finally I have front fogs instead of the giant holes in my front valance & the correct lip (I had an iS lip on the car for a little while, but it hit on the driveway of my place & eventually smashed to pieces).
I also recently rebuilt the rear end of the car with new poly subframe bushes, brakes & replaced the 3.73 diff with a 3.46. The car is easier to drive in traffic now, but still has plenty there for overtaking; although it's slightly less mental. 0 - 100 is probably actually quicker as 100km/h is now possible in 2nd gear, whereas previously it required a change into 3rd.
The next phase will probably be to get some 16 inch wheels so I can run the 296mm Alpina front brakes to help slow down the M30 a bit better than the stock brakes, then hot the M30 up after that, but satisfied with the car for now.

I graduated in period from E21s to E30s and still own my E30 Hartge H26 based around a 1991 (sort of last made 325i Sport) link and info above
I have owned this car from around it was 3 years old
Managed to find a set of 16 inch Hartge alloys (at last)
I too ve the E30 but find the e21 has better ventilation and a better shape (IMO)

Re: E30's
Am fortunate enough to have had a few e30 M3's and think they're awesome cars. Stupidly over priced though. Especially Evo versions, although some folk will pay for bragging rights I guess? Either way, it's a shame they're being priced out of the hands of the enthusiast and into those of the collector / investor. I think cars should be driven not just stored away.
Plan to do a few sprint events this year, including Crystal Palace. The car has various mods, including airbox & Alpha N with 232bhp.

Re: E30's
Not a lot.
Picked her up today, M10 Auto slush box :rolleyes , eleccy mirrors and that's it!
Drove very nice, relaxed and wallowing in the wind :cool
Lightweight, and no, not because of rust, had a good look over and only spotted 2 small problems.
Get back from work tomorrow and start stripping the interior out.
The Blue cab has an E34 3.5 M30 engine in her for cruising:D
Well, after I got back from work, it was out with a bucket and sponge.
Took a broom and pan just in case
Paintwork is still flat atm on the passengerside as I couldn't be bothered anymore today.
After washing it, it was back inside with the bucket, oh and broom and pan, no rust to pick up
Only T-cut so far, but happy with the results.
Roof came out well
And then started to strip out the interior, ready for the M3 rear bench and Recaro LS's, M3 Tech 2 suede steering wheel and gaitors.
Waiting on the Hartges atm , not had time to chase my mate to see if he's done all the sets.
More bufty action after work.
Had to do the bonnet, and passengerside, my bloody arm is killing
Anyway, pics of the bonnet first.
Next, I thought I would clean the scuttle areas.
And finally, the passengerside from this
To this
This will be housing a fully rebuilt E34 M30b35 engine with ITB's and a Rotrex supercharger.
Here's a quick pic of the ITB's I have.
Tools out, and vac.
Cleaned the sunroof area, looks pretty ok, better than what I expected
And also changed the seats over, after a mate had been over to install an alarm.
After a good clean and wash, went out with the missus for a bite to eat, and thought I would take the Chromie out. Looks
Todays action, picked up the Hartges, tyres on and now it's started to p1ss down .
All I need now is to go fill her up, give her a quick wash, and away in the morning to the German car show.
Excuse the 4x4 ride height, but tha'll be sorted out next week.
These turned up today, not bad for £100 delivered. winkeye
Well, not much of an update as such, but I rubbed down the Jimmy Hill and sprayed it black, but i'm not too happy with it.
It had about 4 layers of paint on it, and I can't get the to the tight bits, so gave in finally and this is the result.
Then, thought about getting some bullseyes going.
Took them all apart, cleaned up the reflectors, sprayed the internals and cleaned all the outsides too.
While I was at it, I cleaned and sprayed the buckets, and the actuall lens surrounds, and rings, don't have any High beams yet, but all the crosshairs have been done.
Cleaned all the adjuster up too, so now they're working as they should do.
Cleaned up some "NEW" BMW OEM chrome corners i have, ordered a new chrome centre section, so just waiting on that to land and then bolt it all together.
Got hold of a very very good rear bumper too, just need to pick it up.
Looks like the 318is had some good suspension that I had for nothing.
Turned out to be a complete K&W shocks and springs
Just need to get the front shocks out tomorrow.
And a pic after I washed her.
And this turned up NEW front chrome centre.
Pick this lot up from the powdercoaters.
Started on stripping out the interior for the chromie today, haven't got a lot done but pics below.
Jim, look at my inner arches winkeye
Rear parcelshelf and seats out.
Front half srtipped. Never knew how much the chrome bumper weighed, look at he 4x4 suspension now 8O
Boot out and cleaned,
Doesn't look too bad, not rot really, all you see is surface and a lot of crap. just sponged out the dirt out, and left to dry.
Anyway, let the pics do the talking.
Made these for the chromie so I have an option for full "Euro" look
Picked up a set of H&R front and Rear adjustable Anitrollbars.
Time for the Engine rebuild.
E34 M30B35.
Engine stand bought, went for the 450kg one as there was abotu £5 difference in price.
All assembled.
Engine on and ready for stripping
And this is a few hours later.
Tomorrow, head off and strip it ready for a pressure test and 1/2mm skim.
If funds allow, i'll have it flowed too.
Head off, rocker shafts removed, rockers and cam out too.
Head now booked in for Monday for a pressure test and a 1/2mm skim
I'll take out the valves on Monday for those eagled eye fookers!
Pistons look to be OK, and the bores look good too, can still see the honing marks on them.
Looks to have been running rich though.
Block will be wired down and painted.
Gave the head in on Monday for a pressure test and skim.
Pressure test was good, and a skim of 4 thou wasa only needed.
Picked it up this morning, removed the valves, and the guides and gave it a quick clean.
Removed the lower timing cover (Covered in years of oil baked on )
Removed the sump, again covered in years of oil, and got cleaning.
Inspected the chain, all looks good there.
Looked into the chain guides, and there's heavy scoring of both, so new ones will be ordered soon.
Removed the Oil pump and then started on the bottom end.
Forgot to take pics towards the end of the day, but looking at the shells, the all need to be replaced, and tomorrow, it'll be removing the bearings to inspect those too
Lovely brand new Light billet flywheel, takes the E34 clutch.
Looked into the bottom end shells and big end bearings
Not good, slighty worn and will need to be replaced, so ordered they were.
Cleaned up the face with wet'n'dry and taped up.
Removed the shells and crank and pistons
And left it at that.
Tomorrow, it's clean up time, and painting the block.
Today, I started on giving the block a good clean with degreaser and a wire brush attachment onto an electric drill.
All the surface rust and 20 year oil was removed, then washed down with warm soapy water and left out in the sun to dry off.
Then, sprayed Black, covered up all the water inlets, oil inlets, and masked off the block face with masking tape.
The eagle eyes ones will notice the core plugs painted too, don't worry, they're getting replaced too, just didn't want to replace them sooner, then have to mask them up while spraying the block.
Hear back off my mate who's doing the Bodywork and respray.
Emailed him with a pic of the colour i'm looking to do the Chromie in.
That's all for the moment, more updates on Monday.:cool
