Hi.
Finally I bought this 320is 4 door sedan.
but it have a lot of work on it.
I want to ask you is it normal the water temperature indicator, go to the center and then back to first line?
second: brake pedal vibrate at lower speed under 10km and hear some sound.
Thurd:Whether, if i put Bilstain Motorsport shocks to the back, the car will stay out of level?
4th: And have really hard shifting to first gear.
Best Regards.

And moved

Welcome and congrats on a nice car... don't forget to post a few photos!

As for the problems:

1. Temp usually rises to slightly over the middle and then returns to the center position where it should stay. Looks like your thermostat stays open ie needs to be replaced.

2. Ok you better check the brakes and if there are no loose nuts or freeplay somewhere. Might be freeplay or a warped disc.

3. What do you mean out of level? With fresh gas pressured Billies the car usually rises abt 2-3mm, nothing much. Replacement is easy.

4. Engaging 1st gear is a bit harder on cars with the dogleg sports gearbox especially of the engine and gearbox oil is still cold. Aaaand it won't work is the car is still rolling, needs to be standing still or almost. Gearbox bracket bushes are still ok? With these gearboxes, blipping the throttle always helps to make shifting easier.

Hello and welcome. You should indeed post some pictures :-)
With my car (E21 318i) it's also hard to put it in first gear while the car is moving. Needs to be (almost) standing still. Is this normal, I have the 5 speed overdrive gearbox?

Yep, that goes for all Getrag boxes in BMW's... a kind of protection to prevent you from mistakenly engaging 1st (if you would be able to do that and switch from 2 to 1 while you're planning to switch to 3rd this will cause major engine damage).

Ok thanks for the reply. I wasn't quite sure if it was normal, because I never felt that resistance before in another car (non BMW :-) ) But I had this feeling it was normal because I have no other problems with the gearbox, it's in good condition. I thought that it could be some protection to make you keep it in 2nd gear as long as the car is moving. It's nice to know I could not accidentially shift in 1st gear.

Jeroen,
thank you,
the thermostat leaking on top, so i really must replace ( do you know if this thermostat is only for 320is or some other can be used).

the brakes is ok, maybe some relay is out.

Out of level I mean that don't know how long are Billstain Motorsport MK and Normal shocks, because i don't have front pair, so i wonder whether to buy front and then replace all with blue springs, cause i have :D .

I suggest that is hard to engage 1st gear cause all motor mounts(tampon) are destroyed.

but i'm really motivated to have one showcar 320is.

Hiya,

Hmmm yep that calls for a new thermostat and I wouldn't wait too long... it might not function properly anymore and the temp sender that's in it might not work correctly (move that one(s) to the new thermostat). I believe this is a S14 only part (320iS-M3).

Probably freeplay on a balljoint or worn/dried out control arm bushes.

Nope, the shocks won't change ride height. The springs will...

OK new motor mounts it is, and 'do' the gearbox bushes as well and perhaps fit the stiffer E24 examples (see my mods page at http://www.bmwe21.net/?page_id=186 )

Good luck!

So, I check the the thermostat and it's working properly.
But i see that in cooling system have a lot of dirt and i wash the system few times and i will change short hose, upper the thermostat cause leaking..
now system is ok with new antifreeze. working nice, center, i travel about 150 km after and is ok.
I change the rear shocks, with Bilstain and put to front axle thick tampons.
now the car react very directly.
i put little gear oil.
I have to finish work to the rear axle tampons and carriers.
Best wishes to all!

Jeroen,
can you type the OEM numbers of this bushes.

I noticed that the car when is absolute cold and driving without acceleration and decreasing speed just maintain speed, the car break and when i accelarate disappear. when the car get normal temperature is ok.
Any suggest?
Thank you.

The problem you are describing is not exactly clear to me, maybe you have another way of explaining?

As for the bushes:

Solic excentric control are bushes are from the 88-on M3 part no 31 12 9 061 222

The gearbox bushes are from the E24 635CSi part no 23 71 1 175 732
They reuire the hols in the gearbox bracket to be drilled from 6 to 8 mm and then they're a straight swap and they do have the same height as the oem bushes. They are much stiffer and reduce any movement from the gearbox and the tilting of the engine. Feels smoother and makes gear changes smoother.

Thank you.
the problem is that when the car is cold, it breaks, interrupt, like working on 3 cilynders. when accelarate it disappear.

I want to ask about valve adjustment?
or it's with hydraulic lifters?
i read that have 2 types with and without.
