I think I might have the wrong back box on my 320 its not exiting under the valance where the cut out is, what does the standard exhaust for a m20 320 look like?

Perhaps you got the back box for an early 320. The early examples had the end pipe closer to the center (towards the license plate). See example below (but of course that is the dual exhaust on a 323i).

Ah, its the other way around then, you have the old style rear valance that was fitted until Oct 78, and the exhaust is for the later version
