I've always had a problem with my exhaust on and off rattling,I fixed a leak couple of days ago and now it constant rattles from near the rear beam, when I shake it about doesn't seem to bang.I've noticed that the exhaust is only held up by to ring rubbers on the back box clamp and noticed a small metal piece on the body which looks like it used to possibly hold the exhaust In some way but where on the exhaust I'm unsure cause there isn't anything it could grab, any help would be great

What I've had years ago is that this happened only in certain turns (can't remember if that was left or right lol) but I found the rear box was running against the propshaft. Not hard to solve I believe.

check
http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E21/, it always helps.
Search the right model and check the pictures. You'll definitely need a clamp before the rear muffler.

Hello Leelee
There should be a C-shaped bracket that attaches to the top two bolts on the last flange between the middle and rear muffler. This bracket (part #2) holds a rubber ring which attaches to the mount on the body.
I have found a clear picture of the parts you'll need:
I've noticed it can still be a little hassle to get the pipe (or flange) from banging against the rear subframe. I solved that by placing a small block of wood about 1 cm thick between the flange and the subframe before tightening everything up. When everything is tight the pipe should remain well clear of the subframe. Otherwise an extra pair of hands could be useful
Good luck!
