Can anyone help me with a problem I seem to have.

My car is a Type 1 Baur 316, which was converted from LHD some time in the past.

As a result I think it's a bit of a mix of different parts and I'd like to put it all back to being a 'proper ' type 1.

I think it's got a t1 dash, it has the sliding heater controls but the clock binnacle doesn't seem to fit very well.

I had it out to replace some bulbs as it doesn't light up very well, and on one of the pictures I saw on the forum, all the clocks were lit up and very bright (in a post where someone was asking which parts of the dash light up)

It seems on mine that the only light (apart from the Handbrake and other warning lights) comes from 3 tiny orange push fit bulbs, that are housed above the binnacle attached directly to clips on the dash, and some down through 3 holes in the roof of the binnacle.

My problem is that the holes don't line up with the lights. The left hand one is ok, the middle bracket is exactly half way toway far across, so the bulb is only half way above the hole, and the final bracket is at the far edge of the hole, so the bulb sits off to the right of the hole and little to no light passes through. It also seems to me that there should be some sort of filter or attachment on the binnacle, but mine just has 3 open, empty holes.

The trim that fits around the Base of the binnacle and houses the hazard lights and light pull switch also doesn't seem to fit very well where it meets the blower on the right hand side against the door. Just above the blower is a small clip, but there is no corresponding recess for it to fit into on the dash.
When I removed it is clear a previous owner had some problems as the dash has been butchered within an inch of its life to accommodate the light and heater switches.
The trim also has a recess for a fog light switch, but there is no corresponding hole in the dash to allow fitment of the switch, and as such I don't think my car has any fog lights. I certainly can't find a switch anywhere...

So, advice please. Am I right in thinking this is the wrong binnacle, and/or trim piece?
If that's the case would it be best to just get hold of a Type 1 binnacle and trim piece?

How much should the clocks light up? I see no obvious places for bulbs to light up the dials, so does the only light come from above?

Sorry for the long post and lots of questions, never having seen one lit up till I got mine back last week I'm not sure just how it should be.

Probably best if I go take a few pictures if that'd help?

Some pics will help but yes, the dials are only lit by the 3 bulbs fitted above them, with orange covers on top of the cluster holes for a nice romantic atmosphere . Perhaps the bulbs just need to be lined up?

Ok, so ive got some pics of the dash. To give an idea what i mean. Not really sure where to put this, whether it should be in my build thread, or here...

So i think this is Type 1?



But, the clocks dont seem to fit properley, and just above the air vent on the right is a clip, but there is nowhere in the dash for the clip to fit...

I took it all out as the indicator repeater light is only intermittent, it turns out the circuit track is broken. But also the dash has been butchered:-(



I'm wondering, since it's a type 1, originally LHD, and was imported to the UK in 96, it's been converted since then. Maybe some of the parts are T1 & some T2?

I dont know how much, if anything of the interior is original, & it's had electric mirrors added at some point, as i think the switch is from a later model, and its, let's say 'not wired in professionally...'

This is what i mean about the trim over the window.
It's tatty. The Targa top is in better condition but faded, and the corners are damaged, i assume from being dropped or balanced on.



Lastly, for now, the Air Filter unit has been 'chopped' at some point.



Is there any benefit to this, or is it best to put it back to standard? I do have a complete unit but it needs a bit of work, and there's no pipework. Just wondered why this would have been done.

Ahhhh that is a nice mix up of dash parts indeed. The dash itself looks like its a type 1. This does not have air vents in the far corners but switches. The dash was cut up to give way to the vents. However, the heater panel in the middle with the slides is type 1. But then it could very well be that the instrument cluster is a type 2 which explains it doesn't sit properly in the dash and the lights don't line up.

Switch for the electric mirrors appears to be chopped up as well, missing the electrical connections (compare with below)


Seats look lovely though!

On the door handles: the chromed plastic trim is available separately.

Trim over the windscreen is vinyl indeed.

Air filter: chopped up, I see more idiots chop up air filter housings, also on later models, for better performance or sound. Useless and now you miss the valve that regulates intake air, normally letting cold air in from the front (more than it does now as its picking up air just above the exhaust manifold!!!) but also to be able to pick up air from the engine bay if required on very cold days.

The door cards I have in excellent cond, they need to be dyed but it works well, the vinyl piece I have is for inside the car but I thought they were all meant to be a canvas type material originally? Cheers Gra
