Two questions (Earths & Fuel Filters)

Hi all.

Firstly please could you tell me what your setup is with regards to fuel filters? Particularly anyone with a 320/6... I'm looking to eliminate a temperamental idle (drops off at random times), here are some details/queries with my setup:

- I know there is a filter within the fuel pump, so I plan to remove and clean this - is that advisable in your opinion or should I replace it?
- I can't see any other in-line fuel filters - has anyone installed one? If so, where do you find best?

Secondly, earths..

- Is there a central point where things are grounded off in a group? I should know this, but don't, if I can find the Haynes I will look it up - I wanted to check they are all making good connections, particularly the ignition control unit.

I'm running the Weber DGAS.

Thanks all :)

David

There's a plastic filter in the pick up unit inside the tank that just needs inspecting and cleaning, a good moment to check your fuel tank for excessive dirt or rust as well. Suggest to replace the o-ring under the pick up as well (where it mounts to the tank).

Normally there would be a small transparent in line filter in the fuel hose in the engine bay just before the pump which would be the real fine mesh filter.

As for grounds there's a combined point near the fusebox I believe. Common weakpoint is the connection between battery and the chassis (chassis side). Remove the cable there and have a good look as corrosion (rust) is quite likely there. Ignition control unit to chassis is a weakpoint as well, what I did some time ago is take it all apart, clean up the heat sink and module and put them together with fresh heat sink paste and fresh screws, then put it back making sure the one chassis screw makes a perfectly clean (ground) connection.

Cheers Jeroen, that's given me plenty to look at!

I'm pretty sure there are no in-line filters in my car, I do have one though so will install one!
