Later centre console fits in older models?

I am interested in fitting a centre console from 8/79 up, the one that has a lighter-charger next to the ashtray, under the radio, as well as a fader (?) switch? What is this fader fading exactly?
Does the console fit older model?
And, is the ashtray smaller than the old type?
