I am wanting to re carpet the Baur and have been told by several sources that "normal" e21 carpet will not do it. I've measured several times and for the life of me cannot see where the difference would be.

Having said that, my rear seat bottom has never fit correctly. In the offhand chance they moved the rear seat bottom back an inch or so and narrowed the seat this would explain a few things. As it is, my rear seat bottom is about an inch to "deep" and will not bolt up. It may very well not be the original seat. I do know the rear seat back has been moved from its original position (tilted forward at the top) so anything is possible.

Seat bottom is also different, as the frame is ajusted. It is smaller at the side that goes under the backrest. I think you are right in believing it's not the original seat.

I really have never encountered anything to indicate the floor mat would not fit. Nothing has changed there afaik.

The rear seat bottom is different, I had a regular one in to test and encountered exactly what you were describing. The back of the rear seat is slightly more narrow, but with some patience and perseverance that can be fitted from a stock E21 alright.
