As per title

Had this problem a few years back with the Baur.
Cant remember how I resolved the problem.

But no sealant.

Sealant should not be necessary imo, as long as you have the right window seal. If rust is not the cause, the seal is most likely the cause.
As per 1982 BMW switched to a new (thicker) seal and a new front windscreen that is smaller in both width and height. 1. in image is new version, 2. is old style seal. To establish what size windscreen you're dealing with, measure the windscreen height in the middle. The ones that work best with the new style seal are max 629mm.
OEM part nos:
old version 51 31 1 831 958 (-1/1982)
new version 51 31 1 904 395 (1/1982-on)
Updated the FAQ on this as well, with some additional suggestions.

The BMW Classic website always matched dealership price lists in recent tests so this could be a good indication. There I find Euro 94,44 for the old version, Euro 157,39 for the 1982 example.

I had the same problem. In my case there was rot right at the very top corner underneath the windscreen. It was related to the water drain running from the heater plenum. With the glove box out it was visible. Around my screen still looks perfect.
