Hope somebody can assist but my car is off the road whilst we try to locate replacement calipers as the originals are past saving.
We have been unable to find new or old ones suitable to get refurbished so what other options are there?

Many thanks I will call them tomorrow but think my garage has tried all the normal suppliers already, I am meeting them this week to see about an alternative brake set up otherwise another year lost without driving my car.

Front or rears? If front ones are the problem, you can source some good otherones, since the only difference is the spacer in between dor the 323i. Get a good rebuildkit and you"ll get the rubber o-rings aswell for the spacers. The spacers from the old front calipers are almost certainly ok.
For the rear you might want to consider converting to e30 rear calipers. Use the same brakedisc, but all you need to do is drill out the threath inside the holes and grind off a few mm of the useless material between the holes. Oh, and change the last flex hose on the rear axle to e30 ones.
Here is a topic, in Dutch, but the pics say it all

And what parts are beyond repair exactly? Pistons can be re used from other Girling or Até calipers (depending on what brand you have).

Thanks guys, my specialist BMW garage (recommended on here) removed and sent them to brake specialist and the word was they all 4 were beyond repair.
Will find out more when I meet them later this week and report back.

Here's a front O/S from a 320, just needs the spacer from your old caliper:
