Hello,
I have a US 1982 320iA 1.8l that will crank and not start.
Here's what I know:
Car has fuel, as I filled it up the night before and only drove it less than 30 miles at around 80mph.
I was able to start the car afterwards, however, just around the corner, it sputtered, and bucked a bit, then died.
I took off the gas cap to rule out vapor lock (the car will still not start after a week).
Battery is fully charged.
Fuel pump fuse is good, I even took it out and cleaned it a bit and twisted it while reinstalling it.
Fuel pump relay is good as I took it out and tested it in my 1983 320iS.
Car has plenty of spark!
No fuel spray out of the cold start valve.
I took off the fuel line to the fuel distributor off, and cranked it, and no fuel came out.
I hooked up a 12v battery directly to the fuel pump (while the connections to the car battery were still hooked up) and the fuel pump did not make a sound.
I am pretty confident that it is the fuel pump. I do have the one known fuel pump on my 320iS that I could swap to confirm, however, I do not really want to spend the time at this point.
Is my assumption correct in that it IS the fuel pump? Any guidance is greatly appreciated!!
Regards
