e21 5-speed shift platforms

I would like to know what were the different shift platforms for the e21 5-speeds. I know that the early 5-speeds were the Getrag 245 and later there were two versions of the Getrag 240s. The parts manual wasn't really that much help in determine which shift platform was used with what transmission and what was the differences between the platforms. Thanks!
