Hey Guys,

Yesterday i bought myself another E21. It is a 323i Baur from 1981. The car is dark grey and has a APK (MOT) untill august 2009. It has a little problem with the engine, it runs but not good. I bought a extra engine too.

Offcourse it's not in showroom state but the critical points are very good.

The car has a five speed gearbox, Recaro seats and very wrong wheels which luckely a already sold.

A few picture's:

Okey,

I said i would post some pictures.

First a story.

when i was at the place where i did collect the car at first it had a flat tyre. gladly i had a spare because in de bonnet there was none.

Then after a few miles it stopped at the motorway. After trying by myself i decided to call the helpservice in Holland (ANWB). They found the problem after 2 hours. It was a sparkproblem. The ignitionmodule had no grounding so i had a spark sometimes.

After another 30 kilometers i wanted to shift gears and suddenly i could not anymore. The connection between the shiftingstick and the gearbox was not good. After an hour my mate was there and i had the tools and could finish te job.

My mate was driving my other car with the trailer for the spare engine. This because the actual engine in the car has a combustionproblem.

The first thing i did at home. Changing the wheels into alpina's. When i get rid of my 320/6 automatic body i have the space to put the BAUR in the garage.

Update,

My other E21, the 320/6, has been sold so i have space to put the BAUR in the garage.

I started to search for the engineproblem. The engine runs but it has no power and you can hear a strange rattling noise. The previous owner said it had a compressionproblem. So the first thing i did was checking it.

Although i have a very simple tool for it all the six cylinders have the same pressure. Before the first measurement i inject a little oil in the cylinders to mainly check the head. after that i let the engine rotate a while without the sparkplugs to remove that oil. The second measurement gives you a image about the pistons.

It seems that i do not have a compressionproblem so what's next. When it runs it keeps a steady RPM but when i increase the RPM you hear a rattling noise. Could this be the fuelinjectors???

Who has experience with it?

Hi Peter,

maybe the valves? ...or bearing of the crank-shaft?

Waht do you think: Where the rattling noise are coming from? From the head or downside?

greetings Stephan :)

Hey,

I thought that the noise was comming from the head.

First i will check the valve-clearence today.

Can't be the fuel injectors, if your valve clearance is ok, it alsmost only can be a connecting rod bearing

Hey,

Today checked the valve-clearence and it was al OK. No extreme differences en no valve had to little or to much clearence.

@Thijsse, You said probably connecting rod bearing, do we talk about "drijfstanglagers" then?

Update,

After a little meeting with some dutch members of this forum i discovered that there were two hoses switched. One from the coldstartinjector and the other from the pressure-regulator. Once i switched them the car runs perfectly and sound great.

Also switched the fuse-box with the one i still had from my 320/6 so that's allright now.

Started with checking the car out, Some bolts of the suspension were wrong, the wiring, because the battery is placed in the back and must return to the front, The clock in the dashboard stops frequently so i swapped it with the one from the 320/6 and so i must check the whole car. It seems that someone quickly put the car together and thought it was good.
