As some of you already know, or noticed, I was gone for a month to pay another visit to India, my favorite holiday destination. And since my last time was 3 years ago it was about time :P

Went to Goa first, to get some peace of mind, enjoy the beach and meet some friends. After a week we took a sleeper train down to the most southern state, Kerala. Visited Fort Cochin (with no fort  ) but this is an old town that used to be the centre of Indian rice & spice trade and on a small scale this trade is still going on. It's also the place where you can find the famous Chinese fishing nets and we got to help out with operating one of those.

From there we went to Alleppey to rent a houseboat for 24 hours and make a tour of the Kerala Backwaters, some call it the Venice of India. No roads, everyone and everything is moved over water. Beautiful nature!

Taking some inside roads (in horrible condition, we needed 10 hours to cover 300 kms!) we had some spectacular views, rubber and tea plantations, waterfalls, wild elephant dung everywhere around us (perhaps they were watching), Cobra's crossing the road. Finally we arrived in Coimbatore. Not a very special town but it was the only way to get to Mettupalayam where we had a special train ride: a 1918 steam train that took us up in the mountains to an elevation of abt 3.000 mtrs, to the town of Ooty. More brilliant views!

Close to Ooty is the Mudumalay National Park, a tiger and elephant reserve. Had a great guide there that showed us around. 'Tame' elephants are sheltered there but above all this huge place offers many different kinds of terrain hosting many wild animals like elephants, deer, porcupines, boars, bears, monkeys, snakes, many different birds, giant squirrels, leopards, you name it. Went trekking mornings and evenings and saw so much that we got bored and we were taken by surprise by a group of wild elephants that showed up without a noise 5 metres from us. That was a scare but luckily they were in a good mood.

After a few days we moved to Mysore, sofar it's my favourite Indian city and that means a lot since I'm not a city person. Great food, cheap shopping, gorgeous palace, et cetera. From there we went back to Goa for a relaxing week on and around the beach before heading back home. During our stay in Goa we rented a bike and drove it like you should in India... shorts, slippers, no helmet and drive like there's no tomorrow :D

Another great holiday, more than affordable, no dissonants, and fantastic weather while Holland was suffering from a lot of cold winter weather!

Made a little slide showto give you an impression, enjoy!

Indeed stunning and beautiful landscapes!

It is a very good reason to take a month off :D I guess India isn’t that expensive either compared to the mainstream holiday countries.

Thanks guys!

Regarding cost... abt EUR 1500-1800 for one month including flight, stay in hotels and eating out every night, taxi's, bike rent, booze, fags and some souvenirs. It's almost cheaper than doing your groceries here :P

I know people that pay that kind of money for renting a very small chalet in the south of France for one week, travel cost, food and drinks not included.

Very nice Jeroen,

I went to Nepal a few weeks ago to visit my girlfriend who was staying there for four months.

I heard over there a lot of people who have been to india, but they found nepal more beautiful then india because the people in India are very irritating they say.

For the rest I think the countries are the same qua enviroment. So I believe you had a nice stay.

I've been in Nepal for three weeks and it costed also about 1600 euro's. So its not very expensive. Most expensive is the flight voor 1200 euro's.

Greetings loentje

Hi Leon!

Well behavoir or attitude of the people varies with the region I guess and it's always worse in the big cities. Sofar I haven't met warm hearted, helpful and hospitable people like the indians anywhere else in the world. But I'm not a city person so I haven't been there much.

Even my girlfriend was taking a critical look at the indians and she's travelled a good part of the world as well but she shares opinion now :)

Hi Daniel,

Nice to hear! Either you love it or you hate it huh? Feel free to post some photos.

I was planning to visit the more northeastern part of India this winter but I can't get the time off for a decent trip :? so it'll have to wait. Would like to see if I can combine things with the usual places like Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and Shimla. Well, perhaps next year.

If you can use some travel tips for the south let me know! Lonely Planet is a good basis though.

If you go to Dehli, book in to the Taj Hotel.
We got a barain and paid £35 per person per night, this included all the free booze on the 7th floor from 6pm to 9pm :D
Plus there's plenty to do for sights in and around the city.

Punjab is brilliant.
I went there the first time in 35 yrs and enjoyed it.

I've also been to Goa.Spot on for relaxing.
