The Luger Log - The Baron Gets A New Ticker

REDUX

I'm a huge E21 fan. I'm onto my third one now:
The first (no photos at present) was a red 323i which I had to scrap and the second one was, well, a red 323i (not by design, just happened to come up in Auto reader)

Image

which had all the bits (Recaros, LSD, BBS wheels, Ansa exhaust).
A lovely car.
Until some muppet in a Micra rear-ended me:

Image

...and legged it. The car drove onto the lowloader with it's head held high while the Micra had to effectively be picked up with a dustpan & broom.
But my heartbreak was short-lived when this beauty turned up:

It's actually a 320 with (knackered) 323i running gear, but future plans include a built 2.5 lump (no 2.7 thank you,I like my engines to rev), totally refreshing the running gear and fitting all the goodies I've accumulated over the years.

Then there was this E30 Touring...

Image
Image

that had an M50 lump in...

Image
BTW, the engine in front of it that looks like it's being bullied/eaten/sh#gged is a Pinto lump - gives you an idea of how large these frikkin' engines are..!

...which was going in the E21, but decided to put an M20B25 as flogged the bits to my mate who now has the M50 in his E30 Touring (that was a good project to work on - my mate Kev works like Speedy Gonzales). Kev sold me his M20B25788 from the Touring.

The red car was stripped...

Image

totally... A sad end to a great car.

I'm doing all of the prep to put the B25 in, (painting, polishing bits, wiring etc.) one of the luxuries of having a workshop. And not having to rely on renting a garage run by nutty Polish blokes. Tommi.:D :D :D

Got this bad boy on the Bay of temptation:

Image

Can't remember if the guy said it was Hartge or Schnitzer - pattern (anyone?), all I know I got it for £170 and it looks the nuts. Proper RHD fit too as the pipes bend around the steering column, and looks like it will bolt straight up to my Ansa system. Missed out on the fully-rebuilt B25 he was selling for £350, rackum frackum
Fitting it was a little fiddly as the bolts are obscured by the curve of the pipes, so had to hold them in place while it was offered up, but well worth it.
Eagle-eyed amongst you will notice that the oil filter housing is now facing the opposite way, as otherwise the oil filter would be underneath the manifold  great for third-degree burns with your oil services. I just simply unbolted it, switched it round and repositioned the oil cooller pipes, like I did on Zhan's engine the other week.

Probably best. I'm gonna make up some braided hoses and mount mine in front of the radiator

Well, I had a hunch it was a decent car despite all of the bullshittery given off by the seller, so I drove down to Worthing. Story goes the guy is an Alfasud nut (he has a tii with a 1.7 lump I'd love to own), he bought the E21 on a whim, unfortunately didn't like it and needed funds fast to buy another 'Sud, hence the rapid slashing of the price. After two-and-a-bit hours of poking, prodding and looking for the usual E21 issues, I bought it. In fairness to the guy, he made all of the classic mistakes when listing it which contrived to make the car more moody looking than a Moody Blues reunion tour.

Problems? theres - well not much actually. It's done just over 128,000 miles so a few things are a little 'baggy', but it has a sheaf of BMW dealer receipts and nearly all of the MOTs, including head gasket work and new discs about ten years ago. The cars only done about 2000 miles in the last 7 years, so a bit of fettling is required, y'know, servcing, timing belt etc. This car will be kept completely standard as the Luger will be the 'mad' car when it's finished and I did primarily buy this to get my E21 'fix' in the meantime.

Leather interior (with Recaros) and genuine Alpina steering wheel & gear knob (bought in the late 90's according to the dealer receipt). Niiiice. 8)

Now it all goes a bit shonky...
An Alpina fusebox - for those high-performance B8, B10 and B16 amp fuses!

Image

An Alpina ashtray - no doubt to stub out your Alpina cigarettes, of course lit by an Alpina lighter. Mind you, when I cleaned out the ashtrays I found half a zoot  wondered why the car smelt a bit funky. The joys of Morroccan Old Holborn, eh?

Image

Now we're just getting silly.

Then there's the audio install, I reckon it dates back to the early 90's. Old-school or what? (and not all in a good way either) Note the subtle use of household flex for the power cable, and the small colony of scotchlocks round the back of the centre console. And the non-working rev counter. And a decent Kenlowe fan that stays on when you put the fuse in. Needless to say it's all getting re-done. Along with a couple of the MOTs being done in Streatham (and the other 'stuff'...), I've got this image of Denzil from Only Fools & Horses cruising round in it back in the day.

And yes your eyes don't deceive you, that is a carpeted boot. Proper job too, with the backing and vinyl edging. This car must have been garaged most of it's life as the boot and boot lip are rust-free behind the panels.

It's gonna be fun. :D

Sweet car with a bit of a split personality... well that split personality probably refers to the owner haha but she looks good. Remove 224 decals ans she's good!

Congrats anyway and look forwards to catching up again soon. Getting my coilys sorted hopefully by next week so may actually get my ass in gear and make the 30 mins drive to the Ace!

You changing the wheels on this? Or keeping it standard and going crazy on the luger to make up for it? Lol
