I'm not entirely sure tbh. I know an s14 crank can be used but they're obviously not cheap but I've only heard of the Freelander crank and never seen for myself.

apparantly only on an old block as boring to a 92 mm bore makes it quite wobbily

Legend has it that BMW used to scan breakers yards for old blocks to turbo-charge. The sort of boost most home brews achieve would probably be OK.

I thought that was the reason. I take it the M10 has an iron block? Sounds like that famous Formula Ford crossflow engine that had been scrapped (as it had put a rod through the block) and chucked outside, only to be repaired and re-used ages later as the guy urgently needed a block, only to find the engine revved higher than any crossflow he'd ever had, as the block had effectively been stress-releived. Renault back in the Edwardian era, put their freshly-cast iron engine blocks in the yard of the factory and encouraged their employees to p*ss on them, as it helped stress-relieve the blocks.
Guess what I've been doing to a M20B25 block for the last 4 months 'round the back of my workshop.   Image

S14 cranks and m30 pistons give a nice high comp m10

freelander crank is bollox only used in m42 strokers with mods to the crank nose

And according to an indepth interview with Paul Roshce in race car engineering the pissing on m10 blocks is also bollox more high tech mehtods such as xrays were used to select blocks for the m12 engines
