Fuel tank - E21

Post by olly »

Sorry, more fuel tank related bleating from me...

Are the fuel tank sections standard across the E21 range? E.g. could a 323i right tank section be put on a 320?

Just spoken to FritzBits. It is standard across the E21 range so that's one step forward. Sadly these tanks seem to be like hens teeth...

Ha - that's the one I want!

Speaking to specialist suppliers today, the right side is the one that always goes. Have potentially sourced one from Walloth u. Nesch for about £400 delivered. Trying a few more breakers tomorrow AM before ponying up.

Going to keep old of the original and see how bad it is - whether it can be reconditioned.

I may have a spare available when I switch the slug to the alloy tank setup I have. No time to do it before trackday next week though.

It was a brand new one that I painted before fitting as well, not a rusty old one!

if its the right hand side one thats leaking then dump it and put a blocker in the cross pipe. the left tank is the important one having the sender in it.......... i run just the left one like this, works fine.
its slightly annoying on long journeys tho, having to stop every 100 miles or so, but then again atleast you have regular forced oppotunities to stretch your legs!
even if its just a tempoary measure while you look for a solid tank?

having half the carrying capacity fuel wise is definatly not as annoying as having w+n fleese you out of £400!!

just an idea but would it be worth seeing if an engineering company would make up some alloy ones to match the standard?

it all seems like everyone is getting to the point of there tanks rotting to pieces and god knows what the price of one from bmw is

Yep from BMW as well. I bought a pair for about £320 couple of years ago.

Cheers guys. Someone on here has kindly offered me a 2nd hand tank which I'm just sorting out.

I'm waiting to hear on an E21 breaker tomorrow so will post up those details when I have them - could be a useful contact for someone.

I may keep hold of the old one - it wasn't pouring (rather a fast paced drip scenario) so it might something that I could clean and seal with Epoxy (seen quite a few solutions this way) and then make available.

Really helpful guys, thanks ever so much.

I'm vaguely hopeful it might sort out a faulty fuel gauge at the same time (wishful thinking, I suspect the Haynes will come out again for that...)
