petroscf wrote:is it also required to convert from automatic to manual choke as well? Or are there Webers to fit cars with automatic choke?
(I don't think that any E21 with carb had manual choke from factory, at least mine didn't-and it's an early model...could BMW go back later on?)
I just got the 28/36 but it has got a manual choke, so I can't replace my solex which is automatic........................opinions?
convert to manual choke to fit it. after having it, i'd never go back to automatic choke (well, i wouldn't mind it all being electrical like modern cars in that sense  )

the manual choke is so much better in terms of reliablility it really is.

Auto chokes are OK if they work but usually cause more problems than they're worth.

A manual choke is a far better option imo. It's an easy job to route the cable and allows you to control how much, if any, choke you actually need.

You won't regret swapping to manual choke!

In that case, where should the cable pass from?
And where would the edge (the switch for hand-pulling) be placed on the dash?Any manual choke conversion pics?

mate you dont need the manual choke or the auto one - if you fit a weber carb they are pretty good as is.

so thats why i didnt bother making any holes for the choke cable - instead i just held the accelerator for a few seconds in the morning and then it idled fine.

also you live in greece - dont you have nice weather all year round?

Mark, what do you think of that? Fitting the web and NOT drilling for a manual choke...?

Give it a go. If your not happy, then just route the choke cable. I never used the choke when I had twin Webers either. Just a pump of the throttle before turning the ignition key.

I like the added control of a manual choke and by losing the auto it's one less thing to go wrong.

but I suppose that fitting it to the E21 is via a customized patent??
Or do they sell the fitting parts as well, brackets. clamps etc.?

yes you'll need clamp etc. i didn't fit it. fritz did it for me when they sold me the weber. if i remember i'll get a pic of it later this evening for you mate. don't worry, it'll be worth it 8) i'd say anything 0deg celcius you might manage to get away with it, using a bit of throttle to start it.

Any mechanic would be able to place it for you. A little 'L' shaped bracket screwed under the dash maybe?
