out of interest does the block have more or less lean on it? if its more tilted over you could have a problem with oil surging up the block on hard cornering

theres baffles in place - its gonna sit at roughly 7 degrees - it should be ok as the oil pan is flat.

the pick up pipe im going to have to have fabricated now - the metal its made from is un-weldable - shouldnt be too difficult for my fabricator though.

you had to get them from america, are you insane????
if theyre from an audi then get some from an audi.
trawl ebay looking for people breaking audi 80 sports/coupes 8v and 16v early or later shape. 5 cylinder 20v audi 90s/coupes. some later 5 cylinder 100s also had the same guages.
the senders are all common thruout the range. awquard to get to on some cars.
my '86 audi 90 2.2 "kv" engined quattro had exactly the same quages in the same panel.

those guages are from an audi coupe.

have a look on e30zones there are guides on the wiring on there

wiring is simple, when you buy the gauges you dont get the senders and have to source the senders which i cant be bothered and if you do find them people want stupid prices, ok the next sender you need is the oil tep which you CANT find in europe, ive tried looking dont know now if they sell em i doubt it.. ok the sender is the oil plug itself as you see in the picture below in the package and to be honest its still in the package, the rest of them is wired up.. i havent opened it to fit it yet lool... however i got them cheap ... also the oil is 5 bar, if you fit a 10 bar sender you will get wrong readings!! need to get the correct range sender, its all stamped on the VDO sender..

hi guys bored so i thought id update my build thread.

While im waiting for my oil pickup pipe to be made - i thought that i would grab a few parts ready for when it arrives such as the sump gasket, engine mounts and a few other things such as oil filters etc etc.

I decided to fit the fuel pump - there are no brackets to hang this on a 316 so i had to make my own - not too hard to do i guess, but i have to drop the tank to fit another fuel line in. and fit the fuel pump relay - im going to use a 8 gauge wire to power the fuel pump - this was always recommended first job when buying an rx7 - the wiring used to get old and there was a voltage drop which made the pump run slower so you would get DET and blow your engine lol.

No pics of this - i really didnt fancy taking pics under there, its a shit job your always guarenteed to get a bit of crap in your eyes even with safety glasses on!

my quaife diff arrived - this is the most expensive part i have bought for the car so far - its the same price as BBS RS rims lol! it was the only solution i could think of that would allow me to keep the correct ratio and not have to modify my beam / body to fit. I will also never have to rebuild it and came with a lifetime warranty.

Image

This diff nearly killed me - i have no friends helping me, so i had to kinda lift this up using my barehands and very nearly dropped it on my head, had it not been for an angry hulk moment!

Also when i took the front panel off / engine out i noticed a few little rust spots - i decided that i would address these - it was a real pain as they were mainly in little corners and such and the worst place was underneath the rad. I painted the whole front panel with some rust bullet and the bit under rad. This shouldnt ever rust again any time soon, I also sanded down and primered the slam panel - it wasnt that bad just a bit of surface rust around the holes nothing serious, but it annoyed me.

Image

jobs left -

fit oil custom pickup pipe (dunno how much thats gonna cost yet!)
fit an extra fuel line / drain and then take off fuel tanks.
fit relays for rad fan and fuel pump
make up some brackets to hold the radiator on.
clean some parts (gearbox)
final paint for the slam panel and some bits here n there.
then fit the engine / rad / gearbox / clutch / mounts / wire it up
do some more stuff i havent remembered.
then off to the exhaust shop.

What are you doing with the exhaust & manifold? I saw some bespoke 6 branches but they were £1 200.

Are you going to pop a short shift on the gearbox while your at it? If you can, would be a good time to do it I guess.

Good work thus far tho mate. 8)

Manifolds are easy, you just need to lengthen one of the tubular 328i manifolds at the downpipe flange by about 1.5". My exhaust was made by someone local to me.

Looking good so far.

Dont know how ive missed this thread?! Fantastic work so far. Really like your sump, probably has more capacity than mine. I am planning to redo the sump when i fit a 3.0L crank :D

The pickup should be easy to fab up a steel one, you can mod a escort pinto 2L pickup or similar steel item if needed.

Remember the guys racing e36's in the USA reckon its safe to overfill an m50 past the dipstick mark... I cant remember how much but it may have been around 0.5 litres?
I have mine overfilled slightly, i made a new mark on the dipstick when the engine was out.

Once you have the engine fitted in the car remove and refit the 328 headers easily. But i just ran the header as close to the block as possible. and it worked out well.

well done so far, interested to see what you think of the performance...

Nas

I'm interested to know more on your diff upgrade, please spill the beans!

I know someone who is after an M10 alternator, 316 diff and a manaual steering rack for a rally 2002, let me know if you have any bits left over.

well logic was that I wanted a diff I could easily fit without any hassle n be able to reverse anything I have done.

my mate runs a quaife in his 306 gti6, supercharged, its awesome, so I called up quaife and asked them to provide me with a atb LSD. they said they couldnnt sell direct and gave me a phone number.

when I called it - found out it was kevin birds (hartge). they can provide unit on it's own. or if you send a diff to them they can fit it for you. its not cheap (just over a grand) but the alternatives actually cost more..

e12 conversion. will cost about the same mayb more, once you pay for a diff, rebuild it, modify beam, labour etc.

e30 conversion, bit like too much work. I lack the vital skill and ramps to design n make one so id have to pay someone.

run a welded e21 diff. I have nothing against this but the last car I was in that had one made some right weird noises. I know there's a lot of welded diff fans in the world, but my car isn't being built to drift on like every bend lol. its practically free
....
jim n mobster think I'm nuts n now theres prolly more ppl now!. mobster shit himself when I told him how much, n jim reckons ill destroy it in five mins llol.

I hope not, I have been researching and the stock 323i diff is rated to just under 300lbs/ft. the engine I'm fitting makes 180lbs/ft (BMW prolly give flywheel figure) so theres plenty of buffer zone. its the half shafts that might be weak link. anyway I have warranty n the quaife unit is so tough, ill not be breaking that as birds said the quaife can handle 600HP. it's the half shafts n pinion n gear that can't...

ill take you out for a burn once its run in.

I'm going to fit the same diff to my car. I spoke to Kevin Bird at great lengths when I went to their workshops and am confident it's an ideal solution. The lifetime warranty is an added bonus and Quaiffe products are about as good as it gets imo.

a thousand pounds tho? i think your both f*** nuts for spending that much on a diff and not getting rid of the frankly weak driveshafts.
damn straight, if someone from quaife came to my house and said "heres your free quaife lsd, i'll swap it with your welded one." id tell them to piss right orf!

nas i need to take you for a decent drive in mine. in the dry you can drive very very fast round corners without the backend stepping out. in the wet you need to be more careful with your right foot if you dont wana be sideways. but atleast when it does step out its sooooooo predictable you actually start just stepping the backend out because its easier than using the steering wheel to turn corners.
when youve pulled of a heroic drift, both rear wheels turning together means that when you ease your foot off the throttle the car automatically wants to straighten itself up.
driving my car in the wet, nothing makes me smile more than that.
ive done 13000 miles in mine now with a welded diff.

£1000? or free welded diff thats actually better than an lsd in some ways but with the trade off of tyre slip on slow tight corners and parking?
