new update.

The car isn't happy at all nw, the damper weather has meant it's not even firing.

I have now found out that the ignition components that have been replacd by someone are on the most part. completely incorrect.

The coil looks like its from a 320, the rotor arm is completely wrong and i'm about to check the plugs now....

I agree on the coil now. I'm still a little new at playing mechanic :)

I took the dizzy off today, stripped it and rebuilt it. Whilst taking the star wheel off (it's a post 1979) I noticed that on of the arms was all bent out of shape. I've straightened the arm as best I can and reassembled it checking for any interference.

Popped it back on tonight and stll not firing :(

could be the timing is horrifically out (I'm borrowing a gun on Wednesday) getting good looking sparks on all cylinders now though. Fingers crossed for Wednesday

Was it you sent a spare dizzy to? I still have one if you need it - in fact a 1977 and a 1983 so covering both directions of turn.

PM me if you need a spare one to try, I've also got a load of ignition leads going spare.

Well it's fixed.

Thanks to a box full of ignition components from Dr Jim.

I think the problem was the centrefugal advance inside the dizzy. it must of ceased after standing for so long. either that or a myriad of other problems. my rewiring of the dizzy cap may have gone some way to messing it up.. Ahemm

thanks to you all

I've the same problem: runs without the vacuum tubes, very little power, backfires through carb if pushed in the slightest when under 2000rpm and coughs a little afterwards. I rebuilt the carb after realising that one barrel was constantly leaking fuel (when it failed it's MOT) and now it's like this. I should try what you've done, although it does seem funny that having solved one problem another completely different problem occurs.

DrJim, I don't suppose you've another box of ignition bits, have you?!

No bits left I'm afraid. Sounds like your timing could be way off. Presumably the car failed MOT on emissions rather than anything structural??

The carb on the car originally was a new one - does it look newish? Maybe when Mike stuck it all together he used the carb that was on the replacement engine amd Jamie sold off the newer one. I would ask Mike but he deals with 15 or more cars a week and will not remember anything from that long ago! Maybe if you email Jamie and ask him.

Have you got a strobe light to check your timing? I have one sitting in my toolbox that never gets used if you want one to borrow.

And I still have all of Jims spare ignition components. It does sound like a timing issue though. have you got your self a manual?

If not its fairly easy to static time as long as you can take a plug out and see the mark on the puly with the fan on.

If you need talking through it i could write it out for you??
