Re: 316 beige uk
I feel your pain mating up the gearbox... i was up til 3 am underneath the car on christmas eve with my brother trying to get that sucker to locate! never had this much trouble with any other car... just not enough space with an m50 in the e21 tunnel.
My steering linkage is close! brand new engine mounts are crucial here... there is about than 6-8mm between the coupling and the header. It does not bind, however i am having a new linkage machined up at the moment without the guibo.
For ecu, i drilled a hole in the firewall just big enough for the ecu connector to pass through, right behind the glovebox, and the ecu sits neatly in the glovebox...
Relays are still in the engine bay.(e36 ecu/harness)

Re: 316 beige uk
i was cunning. i put the gearbox on the engine before attempting.its such a tight fit lol.Nigel your running a e36 loom which will probably fit a lot easier. I'm going to mount my ecu on top of the metal brace thing for the brake booster in a sealed metal box. the 3 relays (whatever they are for lol) will be on the firewall.
then its the washer bottle. luckily the motor for it is external so I'm going to fashion one using a coke bottle lol.
today I finished the heater plumbing. arranged the power steering pipes, fitted the gear linkage and swapped on a new guibo.
not much left to do now. tell you wat that clutch fan doesn't want to come off! I'm gonna have to buy the bloody tool.
bit of a brain fart this post tbh. I really want it done by the end of the weekend.

Stop bloody moaning and get on with it!
Re: 316 beige uk
the viscos fan wont come off? tighten the belt up as much as you can. put a spanner on it then twat it round with a hammer.

Re: 316 beige uk
the belt is tightened by one of those spring loaded tensioners. I am turning it the correct way.
there's a new problem now. I put the gearbox mount on after fitting the prop / speedo / slave. the power steering pully is touching the arb!

so I had an idea, what if I get some plates about 15-20 mm think and use them to space my arb down a bit? I don't think this will affect handling?

Re: 316 beige uk
bloody hell nas, power steering?
ive got little girl arms and i manage just fine with 35 psi in the front tyres.
throw the power steering away. if you space the bar down your approach angle to speed humps will be crap.
also is that nut to the left on the bottom of the sump, the sump plug? that looks vunerable!

if the viscous is tight... have you got an air chisel? a quick blast with one always undos tight ones at work.

Re: 316 beige uk
that is the sump plug lol its not fully screwed in. besides that the bottom of sump is level with subfame, I was going to make a sump guard.
I'm only sayin lower arb ike 10 to 15mm will be enough? the engine shouldn't be moving that much. meh I know im being a girl by having power steering, but it means I don't need rubber mountings on the rack as the pas rack doesn't use them. besides I have sold my manual rack already n need the money!

Rapidly catching E21 fever (again)
Re: 316 beige uk
not really leading the way - I nicked the sawn off sump idea off nigel lol.
I'm fitting an oil cooler to keep temps down.
my 328i tubular manifolds arrived, n I go pick up new studs n nuts from the dealers tomorrow. also got a couple of 130mmx70mm 15mm thick blocks of alloy I pick up in the morning.
I've had a look I think lowering the roll bar won't cause problems. in fact the old school escort boys lower the roll bar to prevent diving when breaking.

Re: 316 beige uk
hi guys. I'm sheltering from the rain n thought id post up a pic of the lower roll bar. as you can see 15mm blocks have given me bags of room. I've hooked up the lines as well using a mixture of e21 and e34 lines n used the m50 pump.
