spigot bearing is the other name they call it, theres 5 pieces to it. I paid roughly £26 for the lot. GSF / Euro car parts dont do them.

I'll give you the part numbers once i go to the garage.

I just got given a brand new bearing from a1 motor spares for free. They got it from gsf. Happy days, only 1 bit though, what else do you need? It's jis 1 bearing?

well yea, I can see why they say that. Initially every other car has only ever been like one bit. however I'm not familiar enough with beemers so for like an extra tenner I went n got the whole lot. the 323i engine I pulled had all the five bits, which I near enough destroyed trying to save to reuse them.

I suppose ill do the lot really don't fancy revisiting that job when the engine is in.

up to you though mate. if its not a car your planning on keeping just replace the needle bearing?

You might find oil pisses out and contaminates the clutch though.

oil wont come out, if it did then the torque convertor would of been covered in engine oil, its not a cranks seal or anything just a bearing to stop the spigot on the gearbox waving like a donkeys ho ha in the wind.

will take pictures un close n personal like when i do it so can see if needs the sleeve or not.

just popped an S class up to A1 BMW and questioned them on there bearing only motives and they said that every auto to manual conversion they have done has just been a push in bearing nothing else........ then again i dont think they ever dp E21's so maybe the e30 m20 comes with some of the bits as standard.

time will tell

I've seen several cars where the spigot bearing has been forgotten or the bush ( Gordini turbo ) had worn to nothing and oil ruined the clutch but maybe different on FWD or possibly gearbox oil?.

would be gearbox oil i imagine, the spigot from the gearbox would flail around and break the seal that end, wouldnt be good for the gearbox either :(

ok i have found the right bearing now, just have to remove the piece of metal which is in the gearbox at the momment which is a pain in the arse!

Bad day for the panzer yesterday. was towing the car out the garage and the towing eye ripped of and then ripped a hole in the BBS bumper much to my disapointment. this can be fixed though quite easily though. other problem was then we switched sides for the tow bar and then when my towing friend decided to apply the brakes rapidly at a junction i went into the back of my 10 plate loan car, no damage to loan car thankfully but bent my tow bar and bent the min tbumper on the 323i! was fricking livid! never had a towing mishap ever!!!!

After evetually getting the car up to the garage we set about getting the patch plates made up. the bloke with the welder never turnned up so all i di yesterday was get very rusting cleaning up all the bits.

With a bit of luck Loz will be doing some more work on the car today but i doubt it as he is a lazee bum!

forgot to do an update on the spigot bearing thingy

basically there was a small metal (hardened steel) bush where the spigot bearing used to sit.

What i had to do was grind a M12 nut around the edges till it became a perfect circle

this was then tapped snugly intop the center of the bush untill just went past the lip.

i then placed a bead of weld completely around the bush and then into the nut. ( i will take a photo of the bush when i get a chance)

I then had to run a tap down the nut to get clean up the heat warped thread,

once done i purchased a long M12 threaded bar and used a borrowed slide hammer from mercedes and tapped the bush out, was well in there thats for sure!

as for refitting of the spiggot bearing you dont need anyother bits that BMW say you do, the bearing sits perfectly snugly inplace and doesnt move around, the whole in which it sits tapers as it goes in and holds it nicely. im sure a bit of felt behind it would stop moisture or something but it looks ok to me, will outlast the gearbox im sure the way its gonna get treated at PPC.

Thanks everyone for your help anyway.

moral of story is dont try and hammer the solid bush in the first place and it will come out a lot easyer

Hi, not read your thread in depth, so not too sure what your long term goal for the car is, but if you end up not needing that green interior then please give me a shout as my car would benefit from that! Its the same colour but a bit manky. My car is cashmere gold, perhaps I should try and get some pics on here, its coming along quite nicely now.

regards, Roger

If i get time and the car is finished well before the race date then i will have her stickered up ready for the competition
