maybe getting an e28.....

Post by murran »

went to look at an e28 yesterday.
might be getting it i think.
its an '87 d 320i auto, just under 100k i think. in a very similar if not the same colour to mine. interior is very good.
test and tax ran out in april but it looks very very solid.
its had a touch of welding aparently but doesnt need anymore. exterior body work is very good!

it runs well but the auto box is poorly. when you put in drive theres no drive till you tickle the revs up to 1200/1300 rpm then it bangs into gear. but then drives normally aslong as you dont take it out of drive.

guy wants £200 for it!

ultimate aim is to drop a 325i in with motronic 1.3 and 5 speed manual and pick up an lsd.
but temporarily just to run round in.... this auto box problem would it be sorted with a atf oil change? do these things have a filter? waddu fink? :driving

I really liked my e28's just sold an LSD for a ton on eBay but the 520 is the same diff as as an e30 188, never had a slush box but I have a Manual pedal box if you want to go that route plus I am breaking on if you need any panels

Also the m50 fits the same as it does in the e21 ie on the original mounts

if i get it ill see if i can fix the gearbox problem with an oil/filter change if not i'll pull it to bits ready for the conversion.
looking on real oem, these have no speedo cables, having hall effect in the diff. so an e30 gearbox should work. which i can get with an e30 2.5 lump.
would need an e28 m20 manual prop, pedal box stuff, center consol and e28 specific gear shift parts.
this would be a slow project for me due to money restraints and e21 commitments, but if i get it i should be rolling in it next summer!

we will see. :)

anyone have a link to the 5er forum? id like a nosey round, do some searches and look in the forsale bit.

Do it!!! I got my 520i auto below for an unbelievable £50 with T&T, though it had a cooked 2L. I just so happened to have an E34 525i auto M20B25 I bought a few months earlier as an engine donor so I chucked the engine in the E28 though I kept the autobox. I used it for shows last year but cooked the M20B25 as I used the E34 radiator mounted right back on the front panel meaning the engine fan was too far from the rad, it was fine but getting stuck in heavy traffic killed it. The car was too low to go over a concrete verge so I had to keep going!

I was going to fix it up for this season but my E32 735i turned up, so I sold it to provide funds for my 323iM50. Wish I'd kept it TBH, and as Jason mentioned, M50 it. The person I sold it to is doing the M50!

I reckon this look is a bit of you Murran. The single lamp conversion makes it look much lower & wider too imo.

think its got the se pack too. its got front fogs, posh looking comfy seats with rear head rests and a little rear spoiler.

not guna be dropping it on its ass, satin blacking and bastardising it tho. staying standardish.

we'll see, we'll see.

I imagine there must be quite a few people on the drift scene who'd be keen to get an e21?

They are still out there for reasonable prices. 518s are still cheap but you'd have to treat it as a blank canvas! There was a manual stripped out m535i on driftworks recently that sold for £500. Otherwise you could go up to E34s or my speciality, E32s...

E28 are fantastic cars! I'll never sell mine... (People say everything is for sale if the price is right... For mine, the right price is around $50 000. Technically and officially not worth it, but for me it's priceless.) It was the car of my dreams when I were younger, and it still is. I still smile every time I enter the car, the handling and the pure driving pleasure also impresses me whenever I drive it. I love my E28 <3
