Where can I get M30 Mounts? (North America)

Post by Heretic »

Is there any place that sells a pre-made M30 E21 motor mount? I've searched Ebay, and various other places with no luck. I'm not to interested in making my own mounts, but if worst comes to worse, I'll have no other choice.

Thanks,
Joe.

edit: Maybe I should say it's a M10 car/subframe. As that's all we got here in Canada.

Could somebody post up a picture up of a 4 cyl and 6 cyl subframe?

I've had the E21 for years, found a M30 locally from a wrecked E34 (89) 535i. Actually picking it up his weekend I hope, has 170,000km on it, was in an automatic car so hopefully not too abused. I'm getting the complete engine (all accesories, sensors, etc) and the Wiring harness and ECU.

Now I have a few buddies who are pretty decent fabricators, and pretty handy with a welder, and have actually made subframes from scratch, to put Chev Small blocks into various cars.

I know in my case the M30 will bolt up to the M10 trans, and I use the M10 flywheel. Clutchnet Ceramic Puck clutch will be going in. The wiring I can do, I've done a few VW swaps and taken them from CIS cars to EFI. So as long as I have the wiring diagrams, I can do that. Currently what I'm most worried about is how I'm going to do the motor mounts. Making a subframe for a old Ford to hold a 383 chev is one thing, but this is a BMW. My hope is to modify the current subframe and fabricate the mounts from there...

Of course logisitcally, if I was in Europe, I would just get a 6 cyl subframe, and order those Fritz Bitz mounts and do the whole thing 'proper', but shipping a subframe to Canada is not really worth it, and no E21 came 6 cyl here. Just a handful of personally imported ones, and good luck finding one of those in a wrecking yard.

Either which way, failure is not an option...

Ok so here's some of what my research has turned out. If anybody can expand or add to that would be great!

-You can't use Motronic 1.1 in a e21 if you want to use the M10 trans. Because a stock M10 trans does not allow for the engine speed sensor.

-On the later M30B35, and others that use Motronic 1.3 the engine speed sensor is on the front of the engine, meaning these are useable for this swap.

-You can use a M10 Subframe with this swap, but you need the older M30's style oil pan (and matching oil pump). And of course you're on your own for making the engine mounts. I have a bead on a 1978 733i in a wreckers, I'm not sure if this oil pan is going to be of an old enough generation to clear my subframe or not? I've also heard some talk about needing the water pump too, but even if I do need the old style waterpump, it should be relatively easy to attain a new or rebuilt one through a local BMW specialist.

-My Donor engine was sold on me (89 535i), so I'm Currently I'm working out a deal on a complete 89 T-boned 635csi M-Tech. My research shows this car is a Motronic 1.3 car, so should work with my e21 drivetrain. Also it appears this some hope of making the beautiful seats fit my E21.

Any other advice or help?
