e21 differencial

Post by tassilgo »

hi! im buying a BMW 316i e21 today! but i have one doubt! how do i know if the car has auto-blocking differencial (is it called auto-blocking or self-locking? :S i think i wrote it right! :P)
some friends told me i have to lift up the car and spin one rear wheel, and if the other rear wheel spins in the opposite direction, it has auto blocking differential!
is there any other way to know? those someone has a list of the models which have that differential? because its not that easy to lift up a car today since today is a holiday!

do a burnout. your mates are wrong if its a locking diff if both rear wheels are in the air they will turn the same direction.

There should be an "S" printed near the front of the diff too.

Nope, wheels moving in opposite direction means normal or open diff. LSD's were optional on all models but I don't think you will find many on a 316...

Quaife's do funny things  . turn slowly wheels go same direction. Spin fast and they go opposite :?

But its unlikely to have one of those.
