Good power upgrades for a 316...Newbie :)

Post by mk1magic »

Hi,
New to this forum just got hold of a very nice 82' 316 4 speed to take over my stunning mk1 golf (im now selling). I dont really no much bout these e21s other than their stunning looking cars!

Ive got the little 316 4 speed (90bhp if im right) however i wouldnt mind a little more umph from it. Obviously the easiest way would be to slap a larger motor init but im gunna stick with the 1600 for a while so whats the best upgrades to go for. Already has coilovers so suspension is sorted but any engine upgrades that are a good idea for better running, bhp etc etc
Im thinking of bike carbs as i had them on my mk1 golf, awesome engine note, but i cant seem to find anywhere that do s/steel exhaust manifolds to compliment the carbs.

Also what about pollybushes and chassis upgrades.....any good?

I know its a bit vague but just trying to get a feel for the bmw format ;)
Cheers
Arron

Weber or Webers and a Fritz bits 4 branch. Bigger valves maybe, although it would be cheaper and easier to drop a 2 litre M10 engine instead. I think bike carbs have been done on M10 engines but couldn't tell you if they were any good or not? Google Fritz in Taunton for their manifolds. Superflex do all the e21 bush upgrades.

Any photos of your car?

does depend on how far you want to go tbh.

I weighed up the costs n ended up just sticking a big engine in.

initially i did put a weber carb on and it improved the car immensely. are you sure it isn't a 1.8?

if you want a manifold then go see bogg brothers. you must have heard of them already? I think one of their main lines of work is using bike carbs.

yeah bogg did my manifold for the mk1 golf, awesome bit of kit! I dont wanna go mad with it as ive done that before (althou ill probs end up going that way lol) If the m10 2.0 is the same engine mounts and is a nice easy change then ill go for one of them but im not gunna go for changing engine mounts etc etc as the golf was a handfull enuf lol

will a 2002 m10 2.0 fit ok as they are injection as standard, can they be converted back to carb ?

Only tii's are injection as standard and a used engine from one of those is quite desirable / expensive. If you find one though, then yes, it can be run on a carb.

I'm guessing you're not far from Cromer? If you can get 3 tii's you're onto a winner as values have gone up considerably lately.
