Aww that's a shame, I can't get enough of the snow pictures up north, it's so hardcore compared to hertfordshire's pitiful display!

ive done about 1000 miles trouble free now (not bad for something i have juggled spanners on!) and so to celebrate i fancied having a bit of fun in a deserted carpark, hope i dont look like too much of a chav, but i defo had to test the quaife! this is pretty much my first attempt at a donut, i did a proper one after this and it was a tyre smoker (my phone didnt save it though doh! :launch

lol murran - you drive like that - everywhere!?

well not really got much to put on this thread anymore now, im kinda at the end of the project so just driving and enjoying the fruits of my labour.

Now I have got to know the car a bit better - there is a little problem i found is that on the motorway you have to drive it at over 3.5k as thats when the engine really starts going. At 70mph its just under 3k and its not bad, its just a little sluggish to get going but if you keep your foot in then at 85 the engine starts to really sing, so you end up just driving at 90mph / 3700 -4000 rpm everywhere which means you get plenty of instant grunt if you give it a prod but not so good fuel economy..

What I want is that sort of eagerness it has at 80-90 but at 70 ish as at those speeds getting 35-40mpg with instant grunt would be ideal driveablity.

So i bought a ready mapped eprom from a german tunung company on ebay- its a map thats been created on a car on a dyno that has a free flowing air filter and exhaust. They advance the timing a little and raise the rev limit to 7k

im not too fussed about the hp gain (about 30hp best) but what i bought it for was the torque curve starts nearly 500-750rpm earlier so it should solve my little drivability problem. I know these chips are generic mapped, but i think it will do for a while till i get round to changing the engine to a 2.8 m50 or just getting a custom map if i decide to fit m3 cams instead.

i will book a dyno day for the end of the month to make sure that the a/f ratio is still ok (should be though they do still err on the side of caution).

Oh yeah i also have an interesting problem with the radiator which has been cooling the engine far too much, i have had to resort to running it with a big rubber mat behind the grill to block off some airflow to the rad! never had that problem before its always been a case of the engine getting too hot! It should be ok to run without the rubber mat in the summer time, but what i wouldnt mind doing is creating some sort of flap system which you can pull a little lever that closes when its cold but you can open up when its fully warm.

What thermostat do you have on the engine? You should have either a 88 or 92 from memory, these were the only 2 fitted from the factory depending on country.
If the t'stat is working should be impossible for the engine to be much less than this, or your gauge may be inaccurate?
I have the same problem of it being too cool, but the local parts store only had a 84deg temp t'stat, i will be swapping this over too an 88 next weekend.

I fitted a turner motorsport chip to mine, the mid range flatspot has totally dissappeared, and the extra rpm is really noticeable when im racing v8 commodores as they are changing at 6k!

hey nige, hope u avoided the floods ok. I did think of u when I heard the news!

yea the fan switch kicks the fan on at 92 degrees, at that point my temp needle is pointing exactly a tiny bit past halfway. when driving constant speed the needle is at a quarter which is no good. I've got a rubber mat when I put it behind the grill the temp more or less stays bout between a quarter n halfway. certainly notice a big difference in economy as the ecu isn't chucking so much fuel in.

its wierd running too cold never had this kind of problem before. every other car has been a struggle to stop temps going too high!

nige, u asked me ages ago what I thought of performance, aside from the flat spot when cruising the car is pretty awesome actually, I like the big torque n the noise 24v makes..

but I think another 50HP would be good though..m3 cams work on this engine and then after a custom live remap. should see about 250hp?

There isn't much real difference in temp, in actual degrees C, between a quarter & halfway on the gauge mate. If you can, I would fit a gauge that shows water temp in degrees C.

All of my 323is do the same; The Bride's temp gauge at the mo is between 1/4 and 1/2, doesn't do it any harm.

i was considering going to york raceway on a RWYB day, as its like thirty minutes from my house. POD is distance away and with fuel prices like this dont think ill be wasting it going all the way down there. I duno what times it will put in, it feels like a "14 second summat" car though, but ive not built it for dragging or drifting really, so im not too bothered about doing it.

I am defo gonna book it in for a power run at my local dyno and check the a/f ratio is still ok at the end of this month.

You should run your car down the quarter before you do any more mods, curious to see how it performs with what is basically a stock setup. What exhaust did you get made up for the car, twin 50mm pipes or single 2.5 inch or..?

Going to make up an exhaust soon, twin 50mm pipes running under rear subframe. Hard to get info on what actually works, just trying to copy the m3 setup but that merges to a single pipe.

Good to hear you are really enjoying the car mate!

I managed a 15.2 so you should manage a high 14 easy enough imo. :launch

anyway its all mandrel bent.
