Re: custom steering link RHD M50/motorsport
Hi
I have orderd the first batch of 5 so first come first served with the payments.
The price is only for the link only you need to get a e21/28/34 UJ and split it in half and use it to make up 2 uj's wich reuse the existing e21 uj sections which connect to the column and rack. You can clean up the UJ bearings and repack them with crease at this stag i have some pics showing the process
Nas I need to get a PAS down think to work the dimensions back from so at this stage this is for manual racks only.

hi Jason
Sure dont mind sending you a spare PAS link, would you kindly PM me your address so that I can post it to you? I know it has to be 10 inches exactly from end to end (including the UJ's)
Would you be able to sort the UJ bit out? I dont mind crossing your palm with a bit of extra coin if you can help me out, I dont have the experience or tooling to do it myself (confidently).

Re: custom steering link RHD M50/motorsport
Payment sent.
Since Ben has already asked, I should have one more E34 linkage spare to rape for the UJs. How long they take me to remove is a different question!

Re: custom steering link RHD M50/motorsport
Am I right in thinking, one E34 linkage = 2 UJs needed for this conversion?

Re: custom steering link RHD M50/motorsport
Sorry for not posting them out I have been in aberdeen today and leeds tomorrow, so I will get it sorted wedendsday
But here is a guide to how they fit
UJ Detials
I have yet to try it in my car but it look’s like you need to rebuild bolt e34 uj’s with the sections of UJ at the end of the stock linkage, but i was hoping one end would be a straight fit but won't know untill i try it on the car
The UJ consists of a cross shaped centre and 4 caps containing roller bearings, as you can see the caps are crimped into the alloy outer

So to separate the caps need to be removed, this one was easy, the dimple in the centre meant a hammer/punch could be used to push the caps out

Some dont have this dimple which makes it a bit more difficult, easiest way I found was to hold the UJ in the vice 'by hand' like so and hammer the alloy outer carefully until the cap moves out

The problem with all this hammering is the roller bearings tend to drop out, which is a PITA so make sure you either have something underneath to catch them or you have some spare UJ bits
Once the caps are out or nearly out you can remove the centre piece.
To refit the needed parts simply press the caps back in with the vice, to secure them I used a centre punch in 4 places on the edges of the alloy outer, you can just see it in this pic. The caps are held firmly enough anyway so you dont need to go mad trying to crimp then back in

This procedure needs to be carried out as the e21 column spline is different to the E34 UJ spline, so you will need to sacrifice an E21 steering linkage.
If you look at the UJ you will notice one half is longer than the other the linkage is designed so the short halfs of the UJ's are clamped to the splined shaft to give maximum clearance, seen below, so keep this in mind when rebuilding your UJ's

The only other thing you need to do is put a 10mm drill through the bolt hole on the rack half to enable the bolt to pass

Re: custom steering link RHD M50/motorsport
Hi Jason, only just found this thread after being absent from the site for some time.
Have you any left at all? I'm thinking seen as my engine is out...i may as well fit one. Do you think an E30 M20 LHD manifold would fit with this fitted? I'm just knocking some ideas around. Also, if and when this engine does go pop i would like to stick some sort of 24v so would be handy.
Also, when i broke the E30 for its 2.7 i spotted it has a brand new BMW rod with bush and UJs - can these be used here or does it need to be from an E21? It looks about the same but i don't know if the spines are the same.
If you've none left, would you be putting another order in next month do you think?
Thanks
Jacko.

I have a few left and it was a one deal to get my self a link, you need an e21 linkage and the e21/24/34 uj's
the e30 m20 manifold issue with an e21 is the manifold hits the inner flitch panel
Also whats' the crack with your mates sierra

Fantastic work Jason
I wasnt sure that the bearing caps would go back in and be secure...was totally wrong, looks like it works great.
