Keeping discs clean
Obviously the easiest way to stop my new brake discs from getting rusty is to drive the car!
However i dont use the car day to day, so can anyone recomend a spray or something to keep the brake parts protected, then when i come to use my car again regularly i can clean them up with brake cleaner.
Any ideas?

Re: Keeping discs clean
So long as you clean them, Vaseline will do the job. Forget to clean them and you'll have no brakes!

Re: Keeping discs clean
I was thinkng something along the lines of a spray, makes it better for hard to get places. Then i can use a spray brake cleaner to clean before i use again.

Me neither. I'd rather just use emery paper to clean off the corrosion.

Cover em with wax and then burn it all off! Bit of an out-there idea like!!

Re: Keeping discs clean
It's only a bit of surface rust, stomp the pedal a couple of times once you get going and it's cleared. If you are putting the car away soaking wet drive with the brakes applied for a little bit before parking up to heat everything up, which'll make sure the pads don't have water under them. I came back from work in my blue car when it was cold wet and salty on the roads, parked it in the unit and by the time I got the car out again a couple of weeks later the discs had huge rust patches on them which gave an ABS pedal sensation and steering wobble - made the trackday I was doing very interesting!

Re: Keeping discs clean
I dont want to deal with the problem, i want to prevent it. Car sits idle for quite a while sometimes.

Re: Keeping discs clean
The only way to stop steel oxidizing is to stop oxygen reaching it. Grease etc will do the job but as has been said, products like that and brakes are not a good mix.

Re: Keeping discs clean
That makes sense, i just thought as you can buy a brake cleaner, you could also get a product to protect them, almost like what is on them when new.
Something i can spray on the discs(while on car), then another product i can spray to clean them.

Re: Keeping discs clean
Other than paint what else is there that you could spray on that wont grease/lube them in some way ? Could always get messy by using silicone and peel it off afterwards

Re: Keeping discs clean
Personally, I would suggest petroleum gel and then use brake cleaner to wipe it off. Just try and keep it away from the pads.
Re: Keeping discs clean
If you can take the wheels off you could wrap the ends of the struts in plastic bags and stick some silica gel in there.
I think you're worrying too much about something completely insignificant.
