318i cams and carbs

Post by jls7 »

I want a bit more power from my 1982 318i and currently looking into getting a new camshaft. just wondering what my options are..

My engine is completely stock M10 atm. the only performance modifications are a K&N panel air filter and 4-2-1 headers with a 2" mandrel bent exhaust.
The plan is to put in a new cam, and to give the head a mild port and polish.
From what i've heard so far, a 284 degree cam will be a simple replacement that will work with current L-jet and all stock components. is that right, and is that a good option? it's my daily drive and I don't want it idling too rough, but i want to get as much out of it as i can reliably.
I was also thinking that down the track i might go for a carb setup too, but don't have the money right now. is there much to be gained with carbs if i'm only using a 284 degree cam?
or should i just wait til i've got the cash for both and get a bigger cam?
thanks guys.

The 284 should be ok without any changes, but I went down the road of doing little bits as I could afford them and I reckon it's cost double (in the end) compared to saving up and doing all a once.
