Jas, the s50 seems to be sitting quite high in the bay here? Im about to start fitting a euro s50 to my car. Yet to trial fit, but looking at this pic, the height seems like it might be an issue? Unless the motor is sitting on blocks here for trial fitting?
Have you tried fitting the headers yet? Reckon they will foul on the steering column?

Hi Nige
That pic the engine is 50mm tall, as it was on my old subframe which was rasied 50mm to sort the roll center out and was okay with the m20 in
On subframe mk2 which is the stock hieght it is okay but gue to the head construction it is still taller than the m50, headers will foul cheaper option may be to use m52 headers and flog the s50 for ££, again you need the e34 m50 sump pan and oil pump.
If you need any s50 euro bits let me know what are doing with the ecu
I had the arches made but you can get cheap 2002 ones from pesch.cz

Re: S50 e21 gruppe 2 style
Ah OK thanks for that info. Was seriously scratching my head getting nervous looking at that photo!
I got a complete s50 motor, box, and harness w/ecu so going to try and use all that. motor will be at e36 angle this time, will need to fabricate some arms.
It looks like the ecu/loom should just hook up and run with the adaptor plug i made for the m50, no OBD or EWS on this if im not mistaken.

Re: S50 e21 gruppe 2 style
OBD is not an issues, but ews is post 95 cars have it and you need either to reflash the ecu to lose it or use the original lock and key to bypass it. The other issue is the s50 ecu needs a speed input signal (unless you delete it by a reflash) and you know the vanos is a separate ecu.
Also do the bearing shells and ARP rod bolts as insurance and I would run a solid flywheel billet steel ones are about £300 here

Re: S50 e21 gruppe 2 style
Ah good info, thanks. Yeah think my loom is pre-ews. Good tip on the ARPs, got a set coming from the US. Just picked up a JBR aluminium flywheel, any idea what sprung clutch to use with this? I heard an e34 m5 clutch disc can be used, not sure if it is compatible with the e36 pressure plate or if i need a full e34m5 clutch kit.
The speed input signal is a tricky one, i thought i heard this mentioned when doing my m50 swap but forgot about it. hmm what are you doing about this? Do you plan on using the OEM s50 harness/ecu combo?
Will look into the bearings. Are you doing mains, big ends or both? Looks like most guys just do rods when doing the arps, mine has 105000miles so not sure.
cheers
nige.
