Speedo stopped working.

Hi all i have been travelling in Oz for the last three Months, i bought a 320 6cyl Baur for the drive
After just over 6000miles in 6 weeks The speedo stopped working, the rev counter works as does the fuel indicator.
Can anyone advise/
I only has a small set o tools here so im hoping its sumit simples

if you pull the instrument pod out of the dash. or somehow disconnect the speedo cable from underneath the dash..... then drive the car forwards, or jack a back wheel up (with the front wheels properly chocked) and let the clutch up in first gear...... does the little square drive it the middle of the cable turn?

if it doesnt then either the cable has snapped or the plastic drive cog in the box has stripped.
