which BMW engine and gearbox will fit the e21?Pls

Hi , All

Can anyone give me your experience of different bmw engines and gear boxs that will fit the e21, Its just that I may up grade, as I think this might be a cheaper option rather that up grade to a 4 cylinder to 2L. In your opionion which engine is best has good carb or fuel injections and quite powerful with timing chain.

Cheapest & simplest is probably m20 2.5 as it'll drop straight in an give over 170 brake straight off.

The options are as many and varied as your committment, ability and wallet depth. You've got a 316 right? Pretty much any M10 or M20 will drop straight in. If you drop in an M20 2.5, you'll have to change springs (and I think the cross member). You'd also want (or may have to by law) put on the ventilated front brakes and the rear discs. A Tii/e12 2 litre is good for about 130-140 hp stock, 143 hp for the M20 2.3 or (like Mark said) 170 for the 2.5.

You could also get really silly and put just about anything in there.
