Possible Engine Overhaul

Post by redline »

My 320/6 has been on the original gaskets and seals since it was made in Munich in 1982, as after some 28 years plus and some 300,000 kms, I am thinking that maybe a overhaul of sorts is due.......mind you the car is not buring oil at all. I guess I am looking at replacing the head gaskets, but I am wondering if there are anything else I should do.

Comments and advise? BTW I m not going the route of converting the displacement to 3 liters, etc!!!!!

If you are not concerned about originality how about an e30 2.5? You could still run on a carb if you didn't want injection too.

unless the engine needs a rebuild i.e. is excessively rattley or has developed a knock or is burning alot of oil i wouldnt bother and the head gasket should only really need changed if it has blown and using water.

in my opinion try setting your valve clearances and a good service first.

If its running the solex 4A1 id consider either taking it off for a clean and service, or switch to a weber. Carbs are a bag of knackers and if its done all them miles with no adjustment, its more than likely down on power due to that. My engine had 70k on with a refurbed cylinder head and my van was still faster than it. Pretty sure it was just the crap Solex eating tons of juice and not doing anything with it

I did consider servicing the 4A1, but I am frightened that the darn thing will fall apart when I open it up!!!!!!!! This is my 3rd 4A1 BTW. I will change to a webber when this craps out.
