Found some rust.. what's the best way to deal with it??

Post by olivewoo »

Since removing my suspension to have coilovers made i've found a nasty bit of rot..

The inner wing/ strut panel or whatever you call it has rotted through and i see you can buy replacement panels from W&N but is this the best way about it or should/would it be easier to just patch the original up?

This is what i've found

And these are the panels that W&N do

I be interested to hear other peoples comments, as soon as the suspension come back i want to get this sorted.

I hate it when one job turns in to two or three more...

This linseed oil-based product is very good if you don’t have the time or means to deal with the rust spot completely. It stops the corrosion (pieces of rust may come loose) and forms a protective coating.

The raw product is popular in the shipping industry to protect ships against the salt water. They even use it to clean a ship’s hold from rust.

Well I'd first clean the surface, remove all the visible rust. That is most likely and sadly going to show you more rust than you see now, but without a good approach (which is welding all places affected) you will have more severe problems in 1-2 years.

On my Baur I just cut that bit off rather than trying to rebuild it.
