E21 - Should I bother?

Hi everybody, I tend to lurk a lot on here and not post too much.

A few months ago I was looking for my dads old car (worth a try - VFV3Y, Henna red, last known in Leeds) but with no luck. But with the insurance on my 'normal' car expired I don't fancy shelling out stupid amounts of money to reinsure it again and I fancy a change anyway, so I thought E21 of course! Now my problem is that I am only 19 and of course insurance will once again be the big issue, so if anybody is a similar age and has any recommendations before I start sitting through endless call centres and disappointment that would be fantastic.

Try and find a company that will offer you a limited mileage, classic car policy.

Yeah I know of a few companies which offer classic policies for younger drivers, Footman James and Peter S. Taylor are a couple I've had quotes from before on other cars but I was wondering if anybody had any specific recommendations or experiences, as obviously BMWs do have a certain reputation...

Stick with a 4 cylinder car to begin with I reckon. Go for body condition over mechanical. Buy the best car you can afford although bits are relatively cheap and the cars themselves are simple and easy enough to maintain.

If your after a classic thats easy to work on and cheap for parts you wont find much better

Try Lancaster insurance. They quoted me £160 for a year 3k miles on a classic policy. Good luck! Ali

normally classic policys are over 25s? some are 21 tho i think?

Just tried Lancaster (online thought) with a limited milage fully comp policy...£5500 (yes that is £5500)

I'm going to give a ring to the companies I know have specific classic policies for younger drivers and hopefully they'll be a bit (lot) more competitive!

How old are you and what model of e21 did you say you had?

19, license 2 years and clean with no claims, also got an IAM qualification, limited to 3000 miles on a 316 unmodified. I've never has a reasonable quote off Lancaster in the past so I'm not surprised, hopefully I should fair better with the others.

im 17 got a e21. paying like 2k a year but its worth it. did have a e30 325 as my first car that was 3500k. been driving since feb. wouldnt have anything other than old school bmw

As for the reputation m3gaz, young lads and BMWs tend to be a no no to insurance companies! I wouldn't know why...
