It's going to be about 3 weeks I'm afraid. I'm off on holiday this weekend and I don't get MIB back till I return on around the 27th'ish. As soon as I can get them swapped over, I will.


I went to Brands Hatch today. It was lovely weather too. Embarrassing moment of the day? Having to be towed out of the gravel trap after an off on Paddock Hill bend. No damage done though - fortunately - and it was nearly the end of that session anyway. I spent the lunch break cleaning gravel & dust out of, and off, the car.

Anyway, a few photos. I was going to try and make a couple black & white for the authentic County Racer look.

Car looks amazing mate. Rocking a Simpson Bandit too ?? Tre Cool. Does the rear spoiler make much of a difference ?

Probably not. It's a nice touch for a bit of day dreaming though....



Helmet is a Simpson Speedway RX. I struggled to find a helmet that's a comfy fit but Simpson came up the largest. Not cheap but as you only get the one head I figured it's worth protecting.

It's great fun and relatively cheap motorsport. In fact, it cost less than some guys there yesterday, had spent on their wheels & tyres.

There were lots of ho-motorcyclists there yesterday too.

I thought id do an update on progress so far seeing as I have hit a couple of milestones.

first job was getting the e36 328i stripped. BIG thanks to Jacko.



i got to this stage in an hour despite theres lots of hidden little screws / bolts holding that front end on



i got my new toy out - mobile ramp - awesome thing - no more kissing underseal while working under axle stands!





heres Jacko hard at work trying to suss out how to take the aircon pump off the engine (its a right pain to remove)



it tipped it down just before we got the engine out - we had to drive for cover in my garage - here it is

Tidy up ensued and engine placed on the dolly



heres the car waiting for my local "scrap artist" to come and take it to the crusher. - shame it had to die really, it was really nice to drive.



i took the auto off and to get the torque converter i had to resort to tried and tested ghetto methods to lock the flywheel as I dont have a flywheel locking thing.



i torqued the bolts holding the flywheel and clutch on to manufacturer recommendations (cos thats the kind of guy I am) and put the 323i gearbox on



Took the old oil pan and pickup tube off - and cut off the braket halfway down the windage tray to clear the new e34 sump.

with all that done - i realised that i had no late m20 starter - Jacko couldnt make it round but luckily i remembered my bro in law won an early e34 525i thats been converted into a pickup truck and a rotting e34 535i with a manual box (going to swap to 535i big six into the pickup) he didnt mind me taking the starter off it. All this faffin around meant I started fitting the engine about 5pm on sunday

so i took off the front anti roll bar / subframe / dropped the prop center bearing / took off the old six branch and gave the engine bay and all these parts a damn bloody good clean after all that oil the previous engine had left behind.

this time I decided to be cunning and not fit the engine by going over the top of the bay but to put the engine in from underneath!

I fitted the subframe to the bottom of the engine and put it back on the dolly and wheeled it over to the car.

loads left to do -

new manifold studs and nuts / rear heater hoses / fan belt / engine service / Jasons motorsport steering link (thanks e30dan!) / all the wiring for engine and immobiliser / double check every nut and bolt is tight / cooling system then its off to the exhaust place to get the manifolds modified and then finally an engineers safety report!

shame my neighbours dont think so lol . We just bought a house that has plenty of private space round the back - and plenty of room for a nice big garage too. Have to finish marks car before we get the keys

Did you not get the drill connector thing with the ramp Nas? I tried winding Shauns up manually once but it was too time consuming, drill is the way forward.

I did the exhaust on the slug with one of those ramps, only problem being I had to jack it up to get the thing under the sills!

Good work on the car, when do you think it'll be ready for Mark to collect? I am thinking I should have a roadworthy Baur for a meet.

Well if all goes well I think ill be done in a couple of weeks.

The retrim in my car is booked in for Thursday, I'm planning on going to the dc11 show on the 19th. You fancy a nice long road trip?

I had the drill connector but I think my drill is crap cos it couldn't handle it lol ill have to buy a better one.
