Post by cdavie2002 »

How can i tell which system the bmw e30 325i engine has? Am i looking for anything in particular, or is there a year when motronic was fitted to all cars?

Thanks

Far as i know all the 6 cyl engines run Motronic. Think there's 1.1 and 1.3 versions though, the later cars (after 86??) should be the better 1.3
The earlier engines do have higher compression which is a good thing for power, but the later ones have the better engine management. Id get as new as you possibly can. Mine is an 1989 with 90k on and runs like clockwork

Hi

You need 1.3 for the conversion, and you can tell that as the crank damper at the front of the engine is toothed, rather than smooth like the 323i.

Best combo early high comp engine later motronic

all e30 325i's had motronic of some sort, 1.1 and 1.3.... but yeah 87 is when 1.3 came in. but was introduced along with the lower compression engine (with the us catalyst laws in mind) 25 6"k" engine number).
mot. 1.1 had the higher compression engine. (cant remember what letter was that was different in the engine number? anyone?)

combine a pre 87 engine with the 1.3 from a later car should see you with 175+bhp by all accounts.
