Re: rookie question???
Did you feel when hit the accelerator that the engine is not pull like it would be?
And when you drop the acelerator pedal, it recover his power?
It is probably a mixture of air / fuel too rich and that fails when you step on the accelerator.

Re: rookie question???
If i am correct you have a E21 320/6? If it has the original 4A1 carb you must search it there.
The 4A1 carb is build with two seperate systems. The smal and big hole at the engine side are for cylinder 1,2 and 3 and the big and small hole athe the side for cylinder 4,5 and 6. This makes that you have two mixture screws also.
Possibilities are:
* acceleratornozzle is stuffed (front or back). You have one membraanpump but two nozzles. Check if you see two fuel injections in the small holes when you move the gaspedal (open the chokevalves first offcourse).
* Vacuumleak. Most likely you run very rough idle
* Mixturesetting. Can give all sorts of problems but when it runs idle it looks like the engine is dancing in rpm,s like a jojo.
* etc etc.
