Re: DrGonzoPOW's 1981 325i - A Few (more) Niggles....
The part that needed welding, i have welded. the pepper pot holes that were in the spolier and footwell have been covered with aluminum mesh and filler, which if anything is stronger than the s**t 1mm thick steel that was there previously and will last longer anyway. Ive not just bodged it, in my opinion its better. I cant afford to be pumping anymore money into this car at present, its only been back on the road a month after being off it for 2 years so i want to get it back asap as the money that has gone into it has been a waste otherwise.

Re: DrGonzoPOW's 1981 320/6 - 325i
Thinking recently about stripping all the interior out of my car and making it into more af a track type beast. I rarely use it and certainly dont ferry passengers about so im verging on turning into more of a 'fun' car than a practical one.
So...i know there's many E21's which have had the same treatment. Whats the done thing ?? Bucket seats, cage...etc etc. If anyone can put some pics up it would be nice !

You'll enjoy the extra performance from a lighter car too!
Rear cage, harness & race seat and a set of poly windows would do for starters.
I warn you though, the whole track-day thing is pretty addictive. Just as Jim.

Whats the deak with the race seats ? Would i just have to make up some custom brackets to fit onto the E21 runners or is it a matter of bolting them down solid ? Ta

I'd bolt them in unless you really need the adjustability of runners? Far simpler to just bolt to the floor. Lower centre of gravity too!

New mot rules will effect a lot of track cars, so for the MOT you need the drivers seat to be adjustable fore and aft amongst other things.
Also keep every thing you take out as a stripped car will be worth less and harder to sell.

I wonder what the reasoning is behind having to retain adjustability?

Yeah, im going to make everything i do - un-do'able incase the time comes to sell it. Are these new mot rules in effect now then ?

Re: DrGonzoPOW's 1981 320/6 - 325i
I would be adapting bucket seats to fit adjustable runners, not only for the MOT legislation but I share my cars out quite a lot. If you adapt buckets onto E21 runners then the seat may end up on the tall side considering how high the standard E21 runners are nearest the sill. I believe the lower set of mounts by the tunnel are the same as E30 mounts, so I will be cutting away the sill mounts to create mounts at the same height and then bolting buckets in on E30 runners in.
Or you could always fix one in, and swap in standard seats at test time...
I'd also strip it, remove the sound deadening but put the carpet back in for the civilised touch

If that works I reckon it'll be the best solution. E30 sports seats are cheap & plentiful too!wiz0r wrote:I believe the lower set of mounts by the tunnel are the same as E30 mounts, so I will be cutting away the sill mounts to create mounts at the same height and then bolting buckets in on E30 runners in.
I junked the under carpet rubber stuff in MIB. It weighs more than you'd imagine, especially if it's got wet. Losing the back seat makes it a fair bit louder inside the cabin. I'm looking at carpeting the rear in MIB once the seats out and rear cage is in.

To be honest im not going for the civilised touch
I want it to be a big noisy monster!
I dont really want to be cutting away anything though as id like to have the option of putting it all back together if needs be. You guys got any nice pics of what you've done to yours ?? Cheers
