Need to think about the exhaust manifold too as the E30 one wouldn't mate with the E21 downpipe. The ports on the injection head were much bigger than those on the E21 - what's the best route? Having my E21 manifold machined out (the difference is pretty huge, not something that could be done by hand I think) or keeping hold of the E30 one and finding a suitable downpipe?

Cool, yep I'ma get it. Gonna pay tomorrow (payday!) via paypal. He reckons he's got an in tank fuel pump and associated plugs too. Still tryna get hold of a sump gasket tho, my motor factors can't get one.

He did say the injector rail/temp sensor housing is missing. Is that vital? Can it be pillaged off the crusty one?

Re money back he's been telling me to do all sorts. Flush it, do a compression test etc. etc. I don't know how many times I've said I'm not putting it in so I won't be doing any of that. Not heard owt for a couple of days but he's still posting on E30 zone. I'll give him till early next week to get back to me.

Been bolting in an m10 myself. The one in my mrs 2002 blew a plug after the thread in the head failed. It was cheaper & easier to bolt a new lump in than get the head repaired. Including the Weber this cost me £50 and a few parts. Hopefully it'll be finished tomorrow. I do miss the simplicity of a carb'd m10 sometimes.

Another question - these later injected M10's have a stupid viscous fan which sound like they cause a whole heap of bother when they start to wear out. I realise it gives the engine a bit less work to do when cool, but still - can I avoid all the problems by just bolting a static fan on there?

yes, yes you can. but youll need to swap water pumps, and you'll need a gasket for it. id stick with the viscous tbh, its not stupid.

flush the engine???? has he seen the pics? the problem with flushing it is it'll loosen all the crap and clog up the oil pump strainer. youd be better off not flushing it tbh! and just whack some 20w50 oil in it and never change it again! the damage has been done!
no matter how many times you flush and change the oil it'll still have carbon shit in it. the only way of getting all the crap out is stripping and chemically cleaning it having the bare parts dipped etc. then youd need all associated new gaskets, bearings, crank checking-journals polishing etc etc.... mega bucks!

plus the cams fooked anyway. does he wana pay for a new cam and a set of rockers from bmw? id give that cam/rockers 2-4000 miles before its completely knackard.
doesnt really matter what the compressions are. all that would show is the valves arnt leaking excessivly and the piston rings and the bores arnt TOO worn out to function as intended.

yep, start a thread on e30zone saying would be happy paying over the odds for this engine and would you fit this in your car? dont name any names tho at first.

Engine, batt relocation kit and fuel pump (inc. plugs for sender etc) all paid for! I've told Pete you were intending to pick up tomorrow morning if that's alright Murran.

I think he might be planning on paying me back as he took my bank details this morning. I've got a plan of action if it all goes pear shaped though!

Remember we'll need to pinch some bits off the carbonite encrusted engine, so best not to fall out with him too badly. I also did receive a spare ECU in the post, so I do still believe he's a decent chap.

picked up the engine, associated parts and bits.
engine fitted in the boot of the e21.

did you find a sump gasket? and do we have an inlet manifold gasket?

You got it in the boot of the E21?!

Having no transport means I was unable to get a sump gasket as my local motor factors are terrible.. Did get some more liquid gasket for the sump though which I can proably bdo while you're sorting Jim's brakes. Is the inlet manifold gasket shagged?

That's encouraging! I've tried to be as amiable as I can, blowing up isn't going to get me a refund.
