cylinder head woes

Post by peteferg »

hi all,

the baur resto is moving along well, all the welding is finished, and the suspension and brakes have been rebuilt. but as the car is outside, i thought i would try and get the car rolling before the winter.

the car ran when I bought it, but i was sure that it was missing a bit, and it was smoking slightly. so i decided as i was replacing the timing belt tensioner and water pump, i would pull the head off for a bit of investigation.

well that was tonight, and i soon as i took the head off i spotted a couple of lovely cresent shapes in the top of the pistons! the wort being no 6. sure enough no6 exhaust valve is bent.

but it has obviously been ran like that, as it has also worn the rocker and damaged the cam lobe. this is expense i didnt need as the baur is eating cash at an alarming rate!! now i could replace the cam, follower and valve, or i could buy a whole s/h head for £120. but now i am concerned that there is some sideways movement in the pistons? how much should they move? if i repair the head am i just strapping it to a crappy bottom end, and would i be better looking for a complete engine???

does anyone know how much a new cam is?

anyone have any advice on my best course of action?
cheers guys,

I have a good head from an E30 that i ran on my old engine (731 cast). I could sell you that for cheaps
Dont think there should be any sideways movement in your pistons though, would think that the seals are shot in that case
