Re: E21 / M42
I guess the same as a m50, chop the sump and shorten the pick-up pipe and make a sump guard.

Re: E21 / M42
I've got a sump guard although the bottom of the sump is closer than I would like. I'll wait and see if setting up the suspension geo' means a slight raising of the ride height as that might be enough? It's not really a massive issue so long as whatever tracks I go on are relatively smooth. The real test will be North Wealde as that felt like I was driving a plowed field!
The standard M42 sump does seem incredibly low though anyway.

Re: E21 / M42
The tracks are okay, it the excurssions, speed bumps and pot holes that are the problem, holed the sump on the e30 m3 twice just on the road (parking bollards and debris on the road) before I got a sump guard.

We have huge speed humps here. Guides & Scouts climb them at weekends they're so bloody big! I've taken a few photos anyway, so I'll upload them once I've had a brew.

Re: E21 / M42
BOOM BOOM! as Basil Brush would say.
M42

Sump guard is a must have item round here.

I'm loving these Yokohamas and they seem pretty close to 888's in performance. I'm hoping they might be better in the wet too?

Looks like mounts have just been set for plenty of negative. Whole car needs geo' set up properly though.

Plan to lose this cone filter and put a shield in.

Rotas make a nice change from the norm.

Exhaust sounds lovely from about 5k rpm onwards

Just a few final touches to be done. A lard arse sized seat, extinguisher, cut-out switch etc. Should easily be ready for Crystal Palace though.
Also going to still go for the County Racer look eventually. Just need to pant and fit the spoilers.

Re: E21 / M42
I want to fabricate some sort of airbox that will mean I can a) junk the mickey mouse air filter and b) get a bit of induction roar going on. Can anyone suggest anything??

Re: E21 / M42
Collected a few bits together with a view to making some sort of airbox and cold air feed.

Also got another chip to try although after the Fritz one I won't be expecting much. It's supposed to be a Conforti chip though and he certainly knows his onions. It's supposed to give another 10bhp but that just seems a bit too much.

Re: E21 / M42
that looks better than a simple cone filter. should work much better!
did you sort the sump being low thing? im forever catching my sump guard on the floor but it never moves.

Re: E21 / M42
It only bottomed out because it was riding on the bump stops. Since the suspension was set it hasn't grounded out once.
The cone filter currently fitted is rubbish so this should be an improvement for sure. I'm hoping it'll give a bit of an induction noise boost too!

Re: E21 / M42
I plan to prep the car tomorrow rather than leave it till the last minute. I've got a few jobs on the list.
1. Oil & filter change
2. Water & brake / clutch fluids
3. Wire up headlights
4. Air box & cool air feed
5. ECU Chip
6. Adjust front camber to 4 deg negative
7. Race numbers
8. Mount in-car camera
9. Tyre / pressure checks
Hopefully that should be about it and then I'm about ready to head down to Kent on Friday. The weather looks promising too!

Re: E21 / M42
Managed everything except the camber adjustments which I hope to do tomorrow all being well.
Headlights were simple enough.

The new airbox was simple enough to do and it sounds pretty good too.

Really looking forward to Saturday now.

Re: E21 / M42
Adjust negative camber and re-checked everything.
Am about to head off to the Holiday Inn near Canterbury so that I can get to the circuit bright and early tomorrow. The weather forecast is pretty good too!
I've even remembered to charge the video camera so all being well I'll post some footage next week.

Re: E21 / M42
Saturday @ Lydden was just so much fun and even the weather was perfect. I'm always put in the modified class with much more powerful & quicker machinery but despite that, and my lack of talent / experience, I still did OK and wasn't bottom of the field. I made some pretty steady progress and each run was progressively quicker, which is kind of what I aim for. Ben (Duracel) came and said hello and offered some helpful advice (thanks Ben) as his Dad was there with an E type. The circuit itself was pretty dusty so there was a bit of oversteer, understeer, oversteer through a couple of the quicker corners. The final run was when I got a bit too confident through the fast right hander at the bottom of the downhill section. Big oversteer swiftly followed by running out of circuit meant new underwear. I got away with it though - just. Unfortunately I didn't get time to sort the camera before scrutineering.
Next year, I'm thinking of upgrading my license and doing a few races with SEMSEC. I know my car won't be all that competitive but this is just about having some fun, not convincing myself I could have been a touring car driver. I still plan to keep doing the sprint events & hillclimbs though.
There's one final track day @ Brands next month and then I plan to start stripping the car down and doing the list of mods I have in mind, such as poly windows. I also need to lose the dash, have the cage welded in and mount the seat lower.
